30th Alpine Meadows snow golf event tees off Saturday
April 23, 2013
Imagine saddling up to the tee, shaking off your favorite driver, lining up the shot and just blasting one off the top of a snow-covered mountain.
You ski (or snowboard) up to your ball, hopefully one of those bright yellow ones, and rip into another swing, snow flying like sand out of the sand trap.
Yep, that's snow golf. The wobbly combination of snow sports and the greatest Scottish invention after scotch returns to Alpine Meadows on Saturday. It's the tournament's 30th anniversary, so dig up grandpa's old clubs, thrown on your knickers and stretch your swearing muscles.
The nine-hole course runs from the top of Alpine's Summit Express Chair off of Sunspot and wanders down the mountain to the bottom of Alpine Bowl Chair.
Players are provided with scorecards, pencils, clubs and tennis balls. Competitors must be wearing skis or a snowboard to navigate from hole to hole, but are allowed to remove one foot to drive, chip and putt.
Winners receive prizes including golf rounds at Tahoe Donner Golf Course, Old Greenwood and the Resort at Squaw Creek, in addition to Oakley goggles, a GoPro, Alpine swag and more.
Registration starts at 9 a.m. at the top of the Summit Express chair and is free with a lift ticket or season pass. All scorecards must be entered into a raffle beginning at 3 p.m. on the Sundeck. A live performance by Peter Joseph Burt & The King Tide will accompany the tournament on the Sundeck from 1-4 p.m.
