Jose Hernandez stuck a piece of broccoli on his fork and tried feeding it to his son, Lionel, at Zephyr Cove Elementary School on Wednesday.
He appeared to be trying to get his son to eat some vegetables, but Lionel, 7, did not bite.
A variety of foods were offered at the Fourth Annual Sharing Feast, where students and families came together for a warm Thanksgiving meal. Broccoli seemed to be the least popular of the offerings among students. So kids had their fill of turkey, mashed potatoes and pie instead.
It was the first Sharing Feast for Hernandez and his son.
“I like it,” he said, as he sat at a table with his family. “It brings everyone together, and it’s good to see friends before they leave town.”
Businesses and teachers donate most of the food for the event each year, she said. Lakeside Inn and Casino provides the turkeys, and parents supply the pies, rolls, juices and more.
During the event, children ate their food, ran around the room and drew pictures of colorful turkeys. “Do the turkey” was written in large letters on one of the paper table covers.
Visalia, Calif., resident Judy Woolley said she was enjoying her time at the feast with her grandson, Kaleb Villa.
Kaleb, 10, recently moved with his family to Stateline, where they will have their first South Shore Thanksgiving, Woolley said.
With a plate of pumpkin pie nearby, Kaleb said he is thankful for his house and enjoys spending time with his family on Thanksgiving.
The students seemed to enjoy the feast and some even came back for seconds.
“We ran out of mashed potatoes, guys,” said Kelly Krolicki, of the Parent-Teacher Club. “Sorry. Eat more pie.”
At least 200 people were fed at the event. It was the strongest turnout yet, she said.
Krolicki, who organized the event with the PTC, said she helped start the feast four years ago as a way to bring students and families together.
“Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday because it’s not about gifts,” she said. “It’s about spending time with family.”
