Dining for Schools cards going on sale

If you enjoy eating out, why not dine for 50% off at more than 40 North Tahoe and Truckee restaurants and help raise money to support Tahoe-Truckee schools? Tahoe Truckee Excellence in Education Foundation Dining for Schools Cards cost $50 and entitles the bearer to 50% off any individual dinner entree at each participating restaurant. The card is non-transferable, but may be used an unlimited number of times at any participating restaurant during the valid period.

Cards are valid Sunday through Thursday only, (holidays excluded) Sept. 25 through Dec. 15; and April 16 through June 15. Several restaurants offer an extended period from Sunday, Jan. 8 through Thursday, April 6, 2017.



Cards go on sale at Safeway (Truckee and Kings Beach), Save Mart (Truckee and Tahoe City), Mountain Hardware and Sports (Truckee), The Store (Tahoe City) and online at http://www.ExinEd.org beginning Sept. 1.



Parents Night Out Friday in Tahoe City

Parents Night Out will be held this Friday, Sept. 2, from 6-10 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 390 Fairway Drive in Tahoe City. Children ages birth-12 years of age are welcome. The church will be showing the movie “Zootopia.” A donation of $10 per child per evening is requested (maximum $20 per family no matter how many children you have). Please feed your children dinner before bringing them. This is a drop in program and no pre-registration is necessary. Nicole Dorr to present at Sept. 8 airport speaker series

Local environmental advocate Nicole Dorr will present at Truckee Tahoe Airport District’s next free speaker event, discussing her trip to Antarctica with the 2041 foundation.

Speaking at the airport on Sept. 8 at 6 p.m., Dorr will present “Lessons From Antarctica, An Inspirational Journey to the Bottom of the World,” including video, photos and stories from Dorr’s recent trip with 120 environmental professionals from 30 different countries. The trip was organized by 2041 Foundation’s founder Robert Swan, the first person in history to walk unassisted to both the North and South Poles.

Erica Jue from the town of Truckee will also provide a review of the Town’s solid waste and recycling programs and what changes may be in store for the future. Seating is limited to the first 120 people who attend. To learn more, go to truckeetahoeairport.com.

Truckee Lutheran Presbyterian Church to host Sept. 11 remembrance event

This upcoming Sept. 11 is the 15th anniversary of the terrible tragedy that struck America and brought pain and suffering to across our country. Truckee Lutheran Presbyterian Church is hosting a community-wide Sept. 11 Commemoration & Thanksgiving event on Sunday, Sept. 11, at 11:30 a.m. at Truckee River Regional Park.

As a part of the remembrance, TLPC will honor those who serve as our first responders to protect and rescue Truckee-Tahoe citizens in case of emergencies and other crises in our community. Speakers will include community leaders from the town of Truckee, Truckee Police Department, Truckee Fire Protection District and the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District. Boy Scout Troop 267 will present the colors and a group from the Truckee Tahoe Community Chorus will lead singing.

Free school supplies to be given out at Sept. 11 church service

Kings Beach United Methodist Church will host a special service on Sept. 11 at 9:30 a.m., when free school supplies and blessings will be given out to local children. Everyone from all backgrounds is welcome to the church’s worship services that include lively music and relevant messages.

“We are just a group of people from the community with real problems searching for real answers; together we help each other grow spiritually,” says Pastor Patty Inis.

Free Diabetes Self-Management workshop begins Sept. 15

A free six-week Diabetes Self-Management workshop will begins September 15 at Tahoe Forest Hospital, located at 10121 Pine Ave. in Truckee. This evidence-based program developed by Stanford University School of Medicine will teach the following topics to attendees: decision-making, becoming a self-manager, understanding common symptoms, using your mind to manage symptoms, exercise tips, healthy eating, and managing your medications.

It’s scheduled for 4:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays, from Sept. 15 to Oct. 19. Participants must attend all six classes. Register by calling 530-582-3587. Pearl Harbor vet to speak in Truckee; RSVP by Sept. 16

Dec. 7, 2016, will make the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Louis Conter was on the USS Arizona that day and is currently one of only six survivors from the USS Arizona. Mr. Conter, U.S. Navy (ret.) served 28 years and is a veteran of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

On Tuesday, Sept. 20, Conter will be speaking at the Truckee Tahoe Republican Women Federated salad social beginning at noon. The public, especially veterans, is invited to attend this event. For $20, attendees will receive a luncheon plus a beverage (beer, wine, ice tea, or water) and the opportunity to hear Mr. Conter speak.

Rental spots still open for Sept. 17 Vets rummage sale

The Friends of the Veterans Memorial Building, in conjunction with the Truckee-Donner Recreation & Park District, are sponsoring a fundraising rummage sale on Sept. 17, from 8 a.m. to noon. There are still a few spaces to rent for $20 per space.

The event will also be the unveiling of the Veterans Memorial Museum, located in the foyer of the Hall. Proceeds will benefit upgrades for the Vets Hall, such as parking lot lighting and parking lot renovation as well as enhancing the museum.

CATT Vendor Mixer set for Sept. 22

The Contractors Association of Truckee Tahoe is holding a Vendor Mixer at the CATT Office on Thursday, Sept. 22, starting at 4 p.m. The CATT Office is located at 12313 Soaring Way, Suite 1G in Truckee.
