Sunshine Letters | Back Pack Drive shoulders great school start in Truckee
October 24, 2013
Brooke Bentley, Julie Huck, and Donna Wood, Truckee residents and the owners of La Galleria, Gratitudes Gifts & Home Décor and White Buffalo would like to say thank you to those community members who dropped off backpacks during the inagural Backpack Drive, which began in August and ended on the First Friday of September. The merchants collected 50 backpacks in exchange for gift vouchers and donated them to Truckee Elementary School.
The inspiration for the drive came from Donna Wood, who said, "Every year KCRA does a backpack drive on television, and I thought this would be a nice way to give back to our community as the school year began." For the Truckee community, the drive meant that underprivileged Truckee Elementary School students could begin the school year with one of the most basic school supplies.
The drive was not only beneficial for the kids who received the backpacks, but as Julie Huck explained, "Collecting the backpacks was a heartfelt and heartwarming experience, and the efforts the community made to participate amazed us." Additionally, "It was rewarding to know that the school appreciated our efforts, and I was excited that the school was so grateful to receive them."
Brooke, Julie and Donna thank all of the community members who participated in this cause and for their donations with a special thank you to Lindy from the Treehouse, who donated six new backpacks.
With the success of this first venture in full view, the merchants have committed to picking a charitable event or cause every two to three months that will allow them to give back and benefit our community. These events will coincide with future First Fridays.
