Truckee Community Christmas collecting food, toys and warm winter wear
December 4, 2013
TRUCKEE, Calif. — The all-volunteer Truckee Community Christmas nonprofit is at the helm coordinating holiday drives that provide a helping hand to Truckee area families in need.
The TCC board works with local agencies, schools and churches to identify needy families, who apply to the program. This year, more than 200 applications have been received and are currently under review.
A few days before Christmas, qualified applicants will receive a box of food staples, a grocery gift card, one wrapped age-appropriate toy for each child in the family, and coats for chilly days. All goods provided to Truckee Community Christmas recipients are donated by community members, and all donations placed in collection barrels marked with the red square Truckee Community Christmas logo on it are guaranteed to stay in town and go to a deserving and grateful individual or family.
FOOD DRIVE: For those heading to Truckee’s Safeway or SaveMart stores, take time to pick up a few extra items to donate to Truckee Community Christmas. For others emptying out their pantry, note items should be non-perishable with non-expired freshness labels. Health codes prevent the acceptance of homemade, canned or baked goods. Cash and gift card donations are also appreciated and accepted. Food collection bins are out now at local grocery stores through Dec. 18.
Suggested food lists are available at the food barrel locations and can also be found online at http://www.TruckeeCommunityChristmas.com along with a list of additional locations accepting food donations.
COAT DRIVE: Warm, clean gently used coats (no holes or broken zippers please) can be dropped off at Church of the Mountains on Church Street in downtown Truckee or at Sierra Bible Church on Brockway Road through Dec. 18. There is also a donation barrel at the KidZone this year.
TOY DRIVE: Toy collection barrels can be found all over town. Donate new, unwrapped toys. Visit TruckeeCommunityChristmas.com to check out the many locations where toy donation collection barrels can be found.
VOLUNTEER: Volunteers are needed to staff the grocery store food collection barrels and also to sort and transport food donations. Toy wrapping times are set for Thursday, Dec. 19, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. and Friday, Dec. 20, 9-11 a.m. in the gymnasium at the TTSUD district office building (the former Sierra Mountain Middle School) on Donner Pass Road. To volunteer, sign up via http://www.TruckeeCommunityChristmas.com.
The senior program provides gifts, a box of food staples and grocery gift cards to approximately 60 low income seniors and 75 homebound seniors. The program that takes care of senior recipients is overseen by Sierra Senior Services (call 530-550-7600), and the Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation’s Queen of Hearts gals make sure that homebound seniors’ wish lists are fulfilled.
SHOP LOCALLY: Three downtown merchants have partnered to support Truckee Community Christmas this year. Take a gift for a senior to Gratitudes, a bag of food items to La Galleria, or a toy to The White Buffalo, and receive a 15 percent off coupon to shop at these stores.
MONETARY CONTRIBUTIONS: Log onto http://www.TruckeeCommunityChristmas.com and make an electronic donation via PayPal, or mail contributions to Truckee Community Christmas, Inc. P.O. Box 2955, Truckee, CA 96160. All donations are tax-deductible.
