Two Chicago men who authorities say had almost 30 pounds of marijuana in their vehicle were arrested this week on misdemeanor accusations and have since made bond.

Yi Wang, 39, and Jin Mei, 31, each face charges of transportation for sale and possession of marijuana for sale. Mei faces an additional charge of possession of concentrated cannabis, and Wang has additional charges of possession of over an ounce of marijuana, giving false information to police and license requirements, jail records state.

California Highway Patrol Officer Mike McDonnell said he stopped the pair’s Ford Fusion hybrid around 4 p.m. Thursday on Interstate 80, near Hirschdale Road, for speeding, following traffic too closely and an obstructed windshield.

According to McDonnell, Wang presented an ID with information that didn’t match his appearance. The pair had no paperwork for the rental car and it smelled of marijuana, leading the officer to search the vehicle.

“There was bulk marijuana found in the trunk,” McDonnell said.

The officer arrested both men on misdemeanor accusations because of Proposition 64, which legalized recreational cannabis and reduced several charges that once were felonies.
