INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — In an effort to keep the Incline Village wastewater system clear and performing efficiently, IVGID staff is asking all residents to refrain from flushing “flushable” wipes.

“Contrary to their labels, these wipes are not flushable and may cause costly wastewater backups in your home’s plumbing and IVGID’s wasterwater system,” according to a district press replease. “Additionally, please remember liquefied fat, oil, or grease (FOG) that is poured down the kitchen sink drain can cause serious problems.”

FOG clings to the insides of pipes and the wastewater system infrastructure, according to IVGID. Over time, FOG can build up and can eventually block pipes completely.

“When wastewater can’t move freely through pipes into the sewer system, it can back up into your home or the sewer line causing unsanitary conditions and expensive repairs,” district officials said. “Sewage backups can damage personal and public property.”

As good practice, residents should throw away the following items:

Flushable wipes

Oils

Fats

Greases

If you have large amounts of used cooking oil, you canuse Waste Not’s free recycling service; it will become bio fuel. For additional tips on preventing sewer backup, contact IVGID Public Works at 775-832-1203. Visit ivgid.org to learn more.
