Letter to the Editor: I’m PO’d, you’re PO’d, we’re all PO’d

Like so many others, my car was towed from the post office in downtown Truckee. The postmaster started a zero tolerance towing policy on New Year’s Eve. The shortage of patron parking must be very extreme, as it appears she will instantly tow a patron’s car for the most minor offense, like stepping off the property for any reason, or parking at night when the lot is empty. Or, as one woman found out last Monday, taking too much time at the counter applying for a passport.Why does the postmaster feel this mean-spirited policy is the only option when she can nearly double the lot capacity over night. How? There are 32 spaces, 2 handicaps available. Each time I’ve checked there are 12-14 employee cars there all day, taking up 44 percent of spaces. Why, pray tell, do you think it best to slam patrons with a $440 minimum towing fee when you can ask your employees to park one block away in the free lot like the private business workers do?Do you think in this year, with so many out of work trying to get by, that you could destroy someone’s life? No $440, no car! No car, maybe no more job. No job, no rent for the landlord. No house, no place to live, not even in their car because they don’t have one.Do you think a tourist might get an unpleasant opinion of Truckee, never to return? I’ve heard the bars and restaurants saw sharp declines in business since New Year’s. Shameful. If you’ve been towed, save the invoice from the towing company. Read online California vehicle code secs. 22658, 22651.07, 22953, 22513(c) to see if you were wronged. Call USPS at 1-800-275-8777 to file a formal complaint.
