Big Brothers Big Sisters is partnering with the Truckee Police Department and the Boys & Girls Club of North Lake Tahoe for new mentoring opportunities.

At the suggestion of Chief McGill, officers are encouraged to spend some of their duty time once a week mentoring a child. So far two officers have been matched. “Big Brother” Officer Andrew Holbrook and little brother Angel have been together for two months.

They’ve spent time visiting the Truckee Tahoe AirShow & Family Festival and Car Show, and look forward to fishing and visiting Woodward at Boreal.

“The Truckee Police Department’s partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters fulfills a missing link between the police department and the community we serve by providing reliable role models for deserving youth in our community,” said Chief McGill.

Through the partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of North Lake Tahoe, Big Brothers Big Sisters matches community members with Club members.

“The staff at Boys & Girls Club has identified five Club members who could use a little extra help with academic or social skills,” said Peggy Martin, community development director for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nevada County and North Lake Tahoe. “Big Brothers Big Sisters then recruits, screens and trains the mentors to work with these children on site at the Club once a week.”

Community support through volunteering or funding is important to these initiatives’ success. Big Brothers Big Sisters receives funding from the Tahoe-Truckee Community Foundation, private donors and the County of Nevada. To find out about becoming a mentor contact Martin at 530-587-7717.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nevada County and North Lake Tahoe (BBBSNC) is an affiliate member of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, a national nonprofit agency dedicated to creating a volunteer base where at-risk child and youth can be matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister. BBBSNC serves children in Nevada County including Truckee and North Lake Tahoe.
