William Andrew English

Andy English, a long time Homewood resident passed away on July 24, 2015, he was 55 years old. Born September 19, 1959 San Francisco, a 5th generation San Franciscan, raised in Marin County. Andy was the son of the late Sara Jean and Dr. James Theodore English. Andy came to Tahoe as a child with his family in the 1960’s where he quickly grew his friendship circle. Eventually he returned to Lake Tahoe making it his home in the late 1970’s. Andy was a familiar face around Tahoma and Homewood, as a young man he worked at the Piedmont Tahoma Market, pumped gas at the local station, did maintenance at Angela’s Pizzaria and was always there when anyone needed a helping hand. “Handy” as he was sometimes known, started his own successful business, Far Best Maintenance, where he was indispensable to his clients. For many years Andy served as a dedicated volunteer for the Meeks Bay Fire District being one of the most active volunteers in the district. If anyone could stop a train in its tracks, it was Andy. He was cut from unique cloth and lived his life in a manner that reflected this. A generous soul and bit of a prankster Andy had a way of bringing laughter to conversations. An avid collector of old bicycles and other vintage items, he could be spotted on his 1948 Whizzer or driving in his old yellow Jeep, dubbed “Mustard Seed” . He once road his unicycle to Lake Tahoe from Marin, just because he could. He lived his life fully and by his own rules, exploring the deserts, back roads, seeking out hot springs and unusual sites. He and his loyal dog Arrow, were living his dream – off the grid near Tuscarora, NV, where he worked for several years at Taylor Canyon Resort and gained a reputation as an excellent cook. Most recently he was cooking at the IL Ranch. Andy had a sense of adventure and spirit not unlike the men and women who came west in the late 19th century. He was not afraid of hard work and along the way acquired many a skill. His free spirit took him on adventures that were reminiscent of that western spirit, spinning a tale such as you might have read in a historical novel and making friends wherever he went. A Jack of all trades, master of some, Andy touched many lives and will be missed. Andy was preceded in death by his mother and father, and his brother James. He is survived by his sisters Sally and Kathy, brother Tom; his self-adopted family, the Latimers, his dear friend Annie Lane, and by his many friends in Marin, Nevada and Lake Tahoe. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2015 from 2-7pm at Marie Sluchack Community Park in Tahoma.Donations may be made in Andy’s honor to the Bear League.
