April 19, 2012
CARNELIAN BAY, Calif. – The success of the Lake Tahoe Concours d’Elegance Wooden Boat Show is reached in part by the efforts of volunteers. The 2012 Lake Tahoe Concours d’Elegance, scheduled for Aug. 10-11 in Carnelian Bay at the Sierra Boat Company, is calling on the support of community members to help make this year’s show the most successful to date. It is the Concours’ 40th anniversary and the Marque Class Riva Aquarama’s 50th anniversary.
Volunteering is a fun way to meet people and be part of one of the finest showings of classic wooden boats in the nation. The job easy and enjoyable, no walking or lifting required. Then, enjoy the show on the day(s) you participate before and/or after your scheduled time block.
Volunteer positions and time slots are available on a first-come, first-serve basis and are needed for set up on Thursday, Aug. 9. Show dates are Friday, Aug. 10 and Saturday Aug. 11, with volunteer time blocks 9-11:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. and 2-4:30 p.m. Available positions are will-call booth, ticket taker, gate keeper and dock hand.

The Lake Tahoe Concours d’Elegance Wooden Boat Show, founded by members of the Tahoe Yacht Club in 1972 and hosted by the Club’s Foundation since 1994, is regarded nationally as a premier event for maritime enthusiasts. Heading into its 40th year, the Foundation has selected Riva Aquarama, celebrating its 50th anniversary, as the 2012 featured Marque Class. The classically beautiful and aristocratic Riva Aquarama was sought after during the height of the Cinarama movie era as a symbol of elegance, wealth and fame. Designed by Carlo Riva in 1962, the Riva Aquarama quickly became the flagship and most famous design of all Riva models.
The Foundation anticipates one of the largest gatherings of this unique design, which in total produced 769 Aquaramas.
The Lake Tahoe Concours d’Elegance showcases anywhere from 75 to 110 antique boats each year. The goal of the Foundation is to maintain the heritage of wooden boating while providing an entertaining and learning experience. Along with the main show, the Foundation hosts social gatherings including Opening Night Gala, Awards Barbecue, Ladies Luncheon and Men’s Grill. In addition to the Foundation events, the Tahoe Yacht Club hosts Woodie-Over-The-Bottom and Mahogany Magic. With proceeds from the Concours d’Elegance, the Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, has awarded more than $265,000 in grants to Tahoe Basin nonprofit organizations to advance maritime education.
