Jim Clark: Charlie Munger’s advice for Donald Trump haters (opinion)

Charlie Munger, Warren Buffet’s business partner of 50 years, has some advice for Trump haters. The 93 year old attorney and investment genius has changed his view since Trump’s election. Only last year he said that Trump was “not morally qualified” according to Bloomberg News.

But speaking at the recent annual meeting of Buffet subsidiary Daily Journal he told investors: “Reexamining options about the whole tax system of the country … I think that’s a very constructive thing. He’s not wrong about everything just because he isn’t like us. Roll with it. And if there’s a little danger what the hell … you’re not going to live forever anyway.”

Of course Munger was around in the 1940’s when President Harry Truman threatened to punch a reporter in the nose for criticizing his daughter’s piano playing. Munger apparently takes the long view that every president doesn’t have to fit a certain mold to be effective.

There is even mounting evidence that some responsible liberal Democrats are coming around to the view that Sen. Chuck Schumer conspiring with a hostile media and Obama Administration holdovers to sabotage the Trump administration is not in the best interests of the nation.

In connection with Schumer’s first prize of war … the resignation of General Michael Flynn as National Security Advisor … Damon Linker, correspondent for New Republic and The Week, wrote a piece titled: “America’s spies anonymously took down Michael Flynn. That is deeply worrying.”

No fan of either Trump or Flynn Linker nonetheless denounced Flynn’s ouster as “political assassination engineered by anonymous intelligence community bureaucrats (who) leaked highly sensitive information to the press.”

The Schumer “stall” of Trump cabinet appointees makes it inevitable that these criminal acts were done by Obama Administration holdovers. In Linker’s words: “Members of the unelected, unaccountable intelligence community (are wrong to) target a senior aide to the president by leaking anonymously to newspapers the content of classified phone intercepts, where the unverified, unsubstantiated information can inflict politically fatal damage almost instantaneously.”

Interestingly Flynn is a member of the Democratic Party and was previously appointed head of the Defense Intelligence Agency by President Obama so the liberals harpooned one of their own. Speaking of phone intercepts wouldn’t a former DIA have known his communications with Russians would be overheard and recorded? Maybe Trump fired him for stupidity.

Another example of a thinking liberal was a response to the recent UC Berkeley riots which resulted in injuries and property damage when students conspired with outsiders to force cancelation of an appearance by conservative editor Milo Yiannopoulos.

In a Huffington Post article, Matt Teitelbaum, President of College Democrats of Maryland, wrote: “I’m a liberal and I want Milo Yannopoulos on my campus.”

He explained that being a liberal he values liberty and freedom of speech above all else. He accused Berkeley “liberals” of being “the regressive left” which does not stand for liberty but embraces “the idea that anyone that says anything which offends them or doesn’t fit into their narrative can and should be silenced.” He describes that mindset as “wrong” and “incredibly dangerous.”

He went on to say that he has heard Yannopoulos speak and “when faced with a respectful challenge to his ideas he’s extremely polite and gives very well thought out answers to genuine questions from liberals. And when they’re not throwing tantrums” he continued “these regressives resort to the next most destructive thing, name-calling.”

When they call Yannopoulos, who is gay and half-Jewish, a ‘neo-Nazi’ it’s incredibly insulting to the memory of my ancestors and the millions of others who suffered during the holocaust.”

So there are intelligent, discerning liberals; you just have to find them. And if you voted for Trump as the lesser evil of “President Hillary” and “Chief Justice Obama” then take Charlie Munger’s advice. Roll with it and enjoy the show.
