Opinion: Squaw Valley, Tahoe deserve better than current development proposal

I was born and raised in Truckee, grew up skiing at Squaw and am now a Graduate Teaching Fellow at the University of Oregon, pursuing a Masters Degree in Music Education.

I actively support Sierra Watch and call on residents to Keep Squaw True.

The list of people in favor of the new Village at Squaw Valley Specific Plan is quite small, but their pockets are deep and they have huge financial incentives to support this proposal.

KSL Capital Partners has one thing in mind — making money at the expense of the place we call home.

It will be our North Lake Tahoe community that has to foot the bill down the road when dealing with even worse traffic and drought in the future. KSL is not the victim.

At the Squaw Valley Municipal Advisory Council meeting in May, it was both long-term residents and second homeowners who stood together and asked for something better than this 25-year project. The Council listened and voted to recommend denial of the project.

I ask the community to do the same at the Placer County Planning Commission meeting on August 11. Demand that they deny this project in its current form.

The community should consider if KSL really has our back. They tout economic benefits, yet ignore the impacts that would be forced upon our entire region.

Some of the same people involved with the failed Royal Gorge development are now working to irrevocably change Squaw Valley. Their bottom line is appeasing a board of directors in Denver.

We deserve a better planned development in Squaw than what is currently being considered, that is why I support Sierra Watch and will continue to Keep Squaw True.

I encourage my friends and neighbors back home to do the same.
