The Wolverines needed to play a crisp, nearly mistake-free game to upset first-place Spring Creek on Saturday. They did not.

After a promising start that resulted in an early 7-0 lead, Truckee turned the ball over on six of its next seven possessions, every one of which led to a Spring Creek touchdown. By the time the damage was done, the Spartans were celebrating a 48-15 rout on Truckee’s homecoming.

The loss dropped the Wolverines to 3-3 in the Northern Division I-A, which is tied with South Tahoe for fifth place with three games remaining. The top four teams advance to the postseason.

The Spartans, who improved to 6-0, will square off against the only other undefeated team in the league, Fallon (6-0), this Friday in Spring Creek.

Following a competitive first quarter, things went from bad to worse for the Wolverines.

Truckee forced punts on Spring Creek’s first two possessions before drawing first blood with a 31-yard touchdown on a screen pass from quarterback Tyler Davis to Carson McCarron. Jose Araiza kicked the PAT, and Truckee led 7-0 with 4:39 left in the first quarter.

The Spartans scored the next 48 points.

The onslaught began with a 76-yard scoring drive in response to the hosts’ opening score, capped by a 13-yard pass play from quarterback Jon Jund to Dakota Larson.

Truckee committed turnovers on its next four possessions, including two interceptions that were returned for touchdowns — 36 yards by Jake Davis and 42 yards by Jund — as well as another interception and a lost fumble. Spring Creek took advantage with a 27-point second quarter and led 35-7 at the half.

The trend continued after the halftime homecoming ceremony.

Truckee received the opening kickoff and drove all the way from its own 38-yard line to the Spring Creek 6 before throwing another interception at the goal line. The Spartans answered with a 99-yard scoring drive.

The Wolverines lost another fumble on their ensuing possession. The next play, Jason Painter scored from 83 yards out on a reception from Jund, who finished with 315 yards passing and four touchdowns.

Truckee cut into the large deficit midway through the fourth quarter with a 75-yard scoring drive that ended with a 5-yard TD run by Cole Harrity.

The Wolverines added a safety when Larson, the Spartans’ backup quarterback, was called for intentional grounding in his own end zone on Spring Creek’s next possession.

The Spartans picked off another Truckee pass late in the contest to give them five interceptions on the day.

Truckee quarterback Tyler Davis finished with 242 yards passing on 20-of-31, with one touchdown and four interceptions. Sean Bokinskie was intercepted on his only attempt. Jack Englert caught five passes for 64 yards, and McCarron caught three for 61 yards. Truckee rushed for 160 yards, with Harrity leading the way with 54 yards on 16 carries.

The Wolverines will look to get back in the win column with a game at Fernley (5-1) this Friday night.
