Wolverines will be all over the field in the annual Sertoma Classic all-star football game.
Seven Truckee players were selected to compete in the 32nd edition of the showcase game, which will be held at Damonte Ranch High School in Reno on June 21. Gates open at 6 p.m. Kickoff is at 7.
The game features the best recently graduated senior players from 30 participating high schools in Northern Nevada. Truckee's seven players are the most of any school except Reed, which also has seven.
Along with the Wolverine players, longtime Truckee head coach Bob Shaffer will get one final coaching hurrah after announcing his retirement this past winter, as he and his staff will lead the Silver team into battle against the Blue team. The Blue squad will be led by Damonte Ranch coach Shawn Dupris and his staff.
Shaffer and crew also coached the Silver all-stars in last year's game, as well as 2010. This year's game will mark Shaffer's seventh Sertoma Classic.
Participating Truckee players include defensive back Javier Virrey, quarterback Erik Holmer, defensive end Jake Pettit, receiver Tyler Griffin, linebacker Julian Aguirre, and linemen Nico Duner and Benito Gurrola.
Fullback and linebacker Buster Fenley will represent North Tahoe on the Blue team.
The Wolverines will be joined by players from fellow Division I-A schools Fallon, Lowry, Dayton and Spring Creek, as well as Division I schools Reed, Spanish Springs, Hug, Galena and Bishop Manogue, and Division III Battle Mountain.
The Blue Team is made up of players from Division I schools McQueen, Damonte Ranch, Carson and Reno, Division I-A members Elko, Fernley, South Tahoe and Sparks, and Division III North Tahoe, Incline, Pershing County, Silver Stage and Yerington.
In last year's game, special teams gaffes enabled the Blue all-stars to break the three-year winning streak of the Silver, as three bad snaps led to 14 straight points by the Blue squad en route to a 34-27 victory.
The game, which is sponsored by the Sparks Sertoma Club, first began in 1981.
