Incline baseball | Highlanders fall to Yerington, Battle Mountain in regional
May 13, 2013
The Incline baseball team dropped two straight for an early exit from the Northern Division III regional tournament in Ely on Friday.
The fourth-seeded Highlanders opened with an 18-5 loss to top-seeded Yerington in a 9 a.m. game. They followed with a 12-6 loss to second-seeded Battle Mountain — which lost its opener to North Tahoe — later that day.
Yerington went on to rout Battle Mountain 20-10 for the regional championship, as the Longhorns defeated North Tahoe 11-6 in a rematch that sent them to the title game. Both Yerington and Battle Mountain advanced to the state championship tournament in Henderson.
The Highlanders got off to a rough start against the Lions, who scored seven runs in the first inning to take control early. Yerington added five runs in the third and six more in the fourth, while Incline pushed across a run in the fourth and four in the fifth.
Incline managed six hits off of a trio of Yerington pitchers, with Masxsimo Battel going 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Tommy Dolan delivering two RBIs on one hit. Jack Clouthier doubled, while Owen Price and Tommy Thompson each contributed one hit.
The next game against Battle Mountain was a different story, as the Highlanders hung with the Longhorns for the first three innings. The wheels fell off in the fourth, however. Battle Mountain scored seven times to adjust the score from 2-2 to 9-2.
