McKechnie, Bishop, Spencer compete in home run derby

Special to the Sun

Truckee's Andy McKechnie and North Tahoe's Baird Bishop and Colin Spencer competed in the second round of the Reno Aces High School Home Run Derby at Aces Ballpark on Sunday.

The eight semifinalists from local high schools had advanced from the opening round on April 28.

Sunday's event consisted of two rounds, the first reducing the field to four players, and the second reducing the field to two players.

Contestants received one point for a hit to the warning track, two for a hit off the wall and three for a true home run. Any swing that did not receive a point was charged as an out, with each player getting 10 outs.

McKechnie led off the first round but was held scoreless. Spencer hit one off the wall, and Bishop hit one to the track.

Spencer and Bishop advanced to the second round, where they were held scoreless.
