Nordic racing | Dylan Syben, Lizzie Larkins win Truckee Sprints
February 11, 2014
North Tahoe's Dylan Syben and Truckee's Lizzie Larkins claimed top finishes among high school racers in the Truckee Sprints this past Friday, while North Tahoe's JC Schoonmaker and Alder Creek's Grace Bronstrone won the middle school races.
The long-running event, which normally is held in Truckee's Surprise Stadium, was moved to Auburn Ski Club, where athletes competed on a 1-kilometer strip of snow.
The spectator-friendly skate sprint format sent skiers on an individual time trial to start. The skiers with the top 30 times in each group then broke off into five quarterfinal brackets of six racers. First- and second-place finishers from each of the quarterfinal races, along with the next two racers, moved on to compete in two semifinal heats. The first three racers in each heat then advanced to the championship race.
In the high school boys competition, Syben finished ahead of North Tahoe teammate Shane Christian in a time of 1:57.21 to Christian's 1:59.50.
Truckee's Aaron Deeter rounded out the top three in 2:08.86. He was followed by North Tahoe's Julien Bordes (2:03.74), Incline's Evan Vomund (2:14.14) and South Tahoe's Kyle Swain (2:12.55). Skyler Mullings (2:15.29) led the Sugar Bowl Academy with a seventh-place finish.
Larkins raced to victory in the high school girls race in a time of 2:20.86. Amanda Kirkeby of Mammoth was runner-up in 2:30.78, and was trailed by North Tahoe's Tara Gallant in 2:39.58, Truckee's Jenna Rohlf (2:29.94) and Bri Parker (2:45.49), and Sugar Bowl Academy's Elise Hardy (2:37.46).
