Nordic racing | Larkins, Holmes, Schoonmaker, Syben crowned champs

North Tahoe's Peter Holmes and Truckee's Lizzie Larkins claimed victories in the high school division of the CNISSF state championships at Auburn Ski Club on Saturday.
Led by Holmes' individual win, the Laker boys swept the top three and placed four racers in the top five to win the team title.
The Sugar Bowl Academy girls, who were led by Bria Riggs' runner-up finish, placed three racers in the top five and four in the top 10 to edge the Truckee girls in the team competition.
The North Tahoe boys and Sugar Bowl Academy girls also finished ahead of the field in the season-long standings.
In the varsity boys race, Holmes posted a combined time of 18:25 between the classic and skate portion of the race. North Tahoe teammate Shane Christian, who finished first in the season-long standings, was runner-up in 18:55, while North Tahoe's Dylan Syben was third in 18:57 and Julien Bordes fifth in 19:45. Bordes placed second in the season standings.
Sam Zabell led the Sugar Bowl Academy boys with a fourth-place finish in 19:45. Teammates Ryland Belisle (19:48), who was third in the season standings, was sixth, Skyler Mullings (20:16) seventh and Peter Carroll (20:21) eighth.
Truckee's Aaron Deeter (20:31) led the Wolverines in ninth, and Incline's Evan Vomund (20:52) led the Highlanders in 10th. Deeter and Vomund placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the season standings.
The Sugar Bowl Academy boys finished second in the race behind North Tahoe and were followed by Mammoth, South Tahoe, Truckee, Nevada Union, Colfax and Incline.
On the varsity girls side, Truckee finished second to the Sugar Bowl Academy, while North Tahoe was third and was followed by South Tahoe, Mammoth and Nevada Union (tie), Colfax, and Incline.
Larkins captured the individual title with a total time of 21:39 between her classic and skate leg. Riggs was second in 22:12 and Amanda Kirkeby of Mammoth rounded out the top three in 22:15.
Sugar Bowl Academy skiers Danielle Nivinski (22:22) and Savannah Blide (22:55) were fourth and fifth, Truckee's Skyler Flora (23:04) sixth, and North Tahoe's Tara Gallant (23:26) and Quinn Lehmkuhl (23:32) seventh and eighth. Sugar Bowl Academy's Camille Hartley (23:39) and Truckee's Jenna Rohlf (23:42) rounded out the top 10.
Syben, Schoonmaker top middle school field
North Tahoe's JC Schoonmaker and North Tahoe's Camille Syben earned respective wins in the CNISSF middle school state championships, while the Alder Creek girls and North Tahoe boys took the team wins.
Led by Grace Bronstrone's runner-up finish, the Alder Creek girls placed two racers in the top five and four in the top 10. Syben posted a winning time of 11:48.5 to Bronstone's 11:49.7 to help lead the North Tahoe girls to a second-place team finish.
Chloe Gorman of the Sugar Bowl Academy finished third in 12:23.1 and was followed by Alder Creek's Abigail Baier (12:28.6), North Tahoe's Sofia Sanchez (12:33.6), Sugar Bowl Academy's Eleanore Hamilton, Alder Creek's Megan Burrill, South Tahoe's Allee Zaccor, Mammoth's Meaghan Thompson and Alder Creek's Kianna Mullings.
Schoonmaker, a regular top finisher throughout the season, won the middle school boys race with a time of 10:18.1, while his team placed five racers in the top 10.
Alder Creek's Haydn Halvorsen (11:02.3) and Tyler Ferrera (11:09.2) finished second and third, Mammoth's Jared Mahler was fourth, and North Tahoe's Max Roske, Nate Cutler, Cooper Anderson and Murphy Scott finished fifth through eighth, respectively. Alan Tester and Zach Larson of Alder Creek rounded out the top 10.
