The North Tahoe Lakers Baseball Team travelled to Lovelock on Thursday, April 6 to play a double header against the Pershing County Mustangs and came out victorious in both games, 15-7 and 14-5.

Senior Trent Lingruen was the starting pitcher in Game 1. He held the Mustangs to one run until the bottom of 6th inning while the Laker Offense tallied up 14 runs by then. Lingruen was backed up by solid offensive performances by many of the Lakers. Sophomore Koby Mattson lead North Tahoe with 4 RBI’s while sophomore Joe Lanza and junior Graham Payne added 2 RBI’s each, and senior Corwin Benskin, sophomore Zander Kriston, and Lingruen each added an RBI a piece.

In the bottom of the 6th, the Pershing County bats came alive and the Laker defense had some errors, which allowed the Mustangs to put two more runs on the board quickly. With a 14-3 lead, Lingruen walked one hitter and hit another with a pitch, so with two outs to finish the game (per the 10-run rule), Joe Lanza came in to relieve Lingruen. From a 14-3 deficit and with two outs, the Mustangs fought back and scored four more runs in the 6th inning earned by solid hits and a few Laker infield errors, bringing the score to 14-7 before the inning ended. The Lakers got one more run in the top of the 7th and held the Mustangs for their final at-bat to end the game with a victory, 15-7.

Laker hitting stats of note for Game 1 included Mattson 4-4, Lanza 3-4, Lingruen 3-5, sophomore Thomas Mercogliano 3-5, and Payne 2-4.

In Game 2, Laker Joe Lanza stepped in where he had finished off, at the mound, and continued his solid performance. Once again, the Laker bats were hot. Lingruen, Lanza, and Kriston all got hits, and, coupled with a few Mustang errors, the first inning found the Lakers up 3-0.

For the next four innings, both teams went scoreless. In the fifth inning, North Tahoe had a great rally of hits. Mattson lead off with a stand-up triple, Lingruen knocked him in with a single, and Payne, sophomore Aiden Fenton, sophomore Eli Snyder and junior Carlos Presadio each chipped in an RBI apiece that inning for a score of 8-0.

Mattson came in to pitch for Lanza at the bottom of the 5th and struck out two Pershing County batters before giving up three runs. At 8-3, the Lakers came back in the top of the 6th with three more runs to counter the Mustangs. Mattson walked, Lingruen singled, Payne doubled for 2 RBI’s, and Payne scored on a pass ball to bring the lead to 11-3. Lakers’ defense was strong and did not allow Pershing County to score in the 6th, while their offense kicked back in again for three more runs in the top of the 7th. Mattson and Payne each had a double and an RBI, while Lingruen added another RBI on a Fielders Choice, bringing the lead to 14-3. The Mustangs had a two-run homerun in the bottom of the 7th but it was too little, too late, and the Lakers walked away with a second win, 15-4.

Laker hitting stats of note for Game 2 included Mattson 4-4, Lanza 3-4, Lingruen 3-5, and Payne 3-5.

The Lakers will play in the Reno Aces Stadium on Monday, April 17th at 7pm in an Exhibition Game against Incline High School. Admission is free for that event.
