State championships

The North Tahoe track and field team will travel to Las Vegas to compete in the Division III state championships on Friday and Saturday.

By the time the regional track and field championships concluded Saturday, fans must have been sick and tired of hearing the words North Tahoe announced over the loud speaker — except for those clad in Laker blue, of course.

With a team of only nine athletes, North Tahoe’s girls cleaned up on the medal count while winning the Northern Division III title by nearly a 20-point margin over second-place Yerington. The Laker girls posted a team score of 153 points to Yerington’s 135.

Led by senior distance runner Tara Gallant, who won all three of her races, North Tahoe’s girls earned eight individual titles and 19 medals, which were awarded to the top four finishers in each event.

Coming off a dominant regular season, Gallant raced to first-place finishes in the 800-meter run (2:33.58), the 1,600 (5:49.43) and the 3,200 (12:40.64).

Senior sprinter Allison Wright won the 100-meter dash (13.71) and finished runner-up in the 200 (26.68), and Kyla Pierce won the high jump (4-06) while placing third in the triple jump (29-09.5) and fourth in the long jump (13-09).

Junior thrower Jordan Briggs set a personal record in the shot put to edge Yerington’s Kassidy Lommori for the regional title. Briggs recorded a throw of 35-02 to Lommori’s 34-07.75. Briggs also placed third in the discus (105-0).

The North Tahoe girls also won both the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 relays with the same four runners — Wright Sara Trimm, Valencia Covell and Allie Doyle — posting times of 53.09 and 1:54.58, respectively.

Kaya Williams, a junior, finished second behind Gallant in the 800 (2:35.62), the 1,600 (6:12.86), and the 3,200 (13:12.71). Trimm finished fourth in the discus (90-05), Maddie Cleeland was fourth in 300 hurdles (57.12) and seventh in 100 hurdles (20.66), Doyle was third in the high jump (4-04) and seventh in the 200 (30.03), and Covell was fifth in the 400 (1:07.38).

Trailing the North Tahoe and Yerington girls in the team results were third-place Battle Mountain (102 points, Pershing County (74), Silver Stage (63) and Incline (61).

For the boys, North Tahoe and Yerington swapped spots, with the Lions capturing the regional title with 140 points to the Lakers’ 128. Battle Mountain’s boys were third with 116 points, followed by Pershing County (75), Incline (64), Rite of Passage (59) and Silver Stage (57).

Junior Max Burkhardt led the Lakers with an individual regional title and three medals. He won the 400 (53.46), and placed second in the high jump (5-10) and third in the long jump (19-00.5). He set personal records (PRs) in both the long jump and high jump.

Senior James Palacio finished second in the 1,600 (4:54.27) and fifth in the 800 (2:07.47), Cam Goldstone placed second in the 3,200 (10:35.07) and fourth in the 1,600 (4:55.01), JC Schoonmaker was fourth in the 3,200 (10:51.53) and eighth in the 12,600 (5:01.53), and Austin Nall was second in the 110 hurdles (18.78), third in 300 hurdles (44.23), and sixth in the 400 (55.61).

Also in the distance races, Kobi Hudson finished 10th in the 3,200 (12:38.78) and 11th in the 800 (2:32.48), and Ryan Heisinger was eighth in the 3,200 (12:11.63) and 13th in the 1,600 (5:47.02).

In the field, junior Nick Joslin set a PR while placing third in the discus with a throw of 120-08. He was 17th in the shot put (32-04.5). Teammate Jacob Buhler, also a junior, finished 11th in the shot put with a PR of 34-04.25 and was seventh in the discus (102-01). North Tahoe’s boys relay teams earned four medals. The 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 relays, both made up of Hayakawa, Alexander Steele, Reed Davis and Lutz, recorded third-place finishes, posting times of 47.75 and 1:39.46, respectively.
