Reno-Tahoe Odyssey Relay Run Adventure records fall

The 13th annual Reno-Tahoe Odyssey Relay Run Adventure concluded in Reno on Saturday, June 3, as 237 teams made up of nearly 3,000 runners completed the 178-mile trek.

By the time the race had wrapped up, a new team, Fueled By Isagenix, had dethroned the reigning champions in record-setting fashion.

The Reno team wrapped up the race with a time of 17 hours, 7 minutes, 52 seconds for a course record to top second place, Nutz, who finished with a time of 17:28:02. Runny Bums, which won the last two Reno-Tahoe Odysseys, finished in third with a time of 17:31:55.

The previous course record at the race was 17:13:51, set by Nutz during the 2014 relay.

The two locally registered teams, Makeup Six and Breakup Six, led by Truckee's Nicholas Martin finished in 14th and 15th place, respectively, and took first and second out of the Ultra Men's division.

The ultra divisions consist of six-man relay teams instead of the usual 12, with team members often running over 30 miles during the length of the race.

Martin said after competing with larger teams in past years, he switched to the ultra division and has put together two, six-man teams made up of friends and family from the Bay Area, Truckee and San Luis Obispo.

"We started out five years ago with a 12-person team," Martin said. "A couple of years ago, we realized we were missing out on half the course and half the fun. Last year, we were able to build two, six-person teams, and competed against each other."

According to Martin, the teams would exchange leads 10 times during this year's race before reaching the finish line within four seconds of each other.

The course route took runners from the start at Reno's Wingfield Park, up into Truckee, around Lake Tahoe and back down into Genoa.

By that time, Martin said his teams were making their way along darkened roads, as they struggled to push through the early hours of the morning.

"You're running on such a high during the afternoon and the evening," Martin said. "Then the hours before dawn, everyone is at their low point — tired and wanting to go to sleep. With a six-person team, you don't sleep."

From that point the runners made their way toward Carson, and then onto the climb up to Virginia City.

"Once that sun starts peaking over the horizon heading into Virginia City, it's a resurgence of energy and we rallied for those final legs."

Makeup Six would make the descent from Virginia City and into Reno to reach the finish line at Idlewild Park with a time of 23:48:57, while Breakup Six came in at 23:49:01.

The race would also see a number of other records being broken during the two days. In the Ultra Mixed division, 6 Strips of Fried Bacon set a record with a time of 21:13:04.

In the Ultra Women's division, Hot Wheels 6 Pack broke a record with a time of 23:41:35.

Also setting a record was Outrunning 50, who broke the Senior Women's record with a time of 26:31:37.
