The Division I-A is gaining weight.
A trio of Las Vegas schools are expected join the DI-A after the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association released its Nevada Rubric point totals for the 2012-14 seasons on Tuesday.
The formula calculates a schools performance in 20 sports over a two-year cycle. The new realignment will begin for the 2014-15 season.
The new schools, Del Sol, Sierra Vista and Spring Valley, must be approved by the NIAA’s Board of Control, which will meet on June 18 in Reno. The Northern DI-A and DI do not participate in the rubric and none of those schools will swap divisions.
Del Sol, Spring Valley and Sierra Vista, meanwhile, did not meet the required 15 points to remain in the DI.
Del Sol did not record a point over the past two years, while Sierra Vista had seven and Spring Valley 11. The rubric assigns point totals for league championships, playoff wins and appearances, and regional and state championships, to name a few.
Spring Valley earned five points in wrestling, three in baseball, two in football and one in softball over the two-year period. Sierra Vista, meanwhile, earned two points in girls volleyball and baseball and one in girls and boys basketball and softball.
According to the NIAA, a DI school with fewer than 15 points is eligible to move to the DI-A. A DI-A school, meanwhile, must reach 150 points to be eligible to move to the DI.
Faith Lutheran and Boulder City were the only Southern DI-A schools to reach the 150-point benchmark over the two-year period, but both exercised their options to remain in the DI-A.
Faith Lutheran, Boulder City, Moapa Valley and Virgin Valley all have the option to remain in the DI-A, since those schools have traditionally competed in that level and have student enrollments consistent with their Northern counterparts.
The addition of the three new schools to the DI-A increases the league to 16 in most sports (SECTA does not compete in numerous sports). Including the North, the DI-A will consist of 25 schools in football (Wooster is in the IA for football), and 26 in other sports.
Sierra Vista and Spring Valley will join Faith Lutheran, Clark, Cheyenne, Pahrump Valley, Mojave and Western in the Sunset League. Del Sol, meanwhile, moves to the Sunrise League with Boulder City, Moapa Valley, Chaparral, Desert Pines, SECTA, Virgin Valley and Sunrise Mountain.
