Ryan Summerlin March 25, 2013
The Incline softball team broke into the win column with a pair of Mount Rose League victories over Truckee on Saturday, 17-3 and 12-9.
Game 1 of the doubleheader was all Incline, as the Highlanders scored 17 runs in the first three innings — five in the first, six in the second and six more in the third — to give starting pitcher Sarah Wright more than enough support.
Incline smacked 21 hits in the game, which, due to the 10-run rule, was shortened to five innings. Junior Caroline May had a monster game offensively, as she drove in six runs on a 4-for-4 performance, with a double.
Senior Katie Orlady and junior Elise Nelson also went 4-for-4, while Maddie Findlen had three hits, Kortney Solis and Caitlin May each had two hits, and Wright and Molly Franklin each had one hit. Wright and Nelson contributed three RBIs apiece.
In five innings, Wright allowed three hits and three runs while striking out three and issuing only one walk.
Truckee stats were not available for either game.
The Highlanders jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning of Game 2. But the Wolverines bounced back to score three of their own in the second inning and four more in the third to take a 7-4 lead. Incline responded with a two-run third and a five-run fourth to take over the lead for good.
Incline had 16 hits total, led by Caroline May, who was 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs — giving her nine RBIs in two games.
Solis also had three hits and two RBIs, while Franklin had two hits and two RBIs, Nelson had two hits and one RBI, and Findlen had two hits. Wright, Tori Findlen, Caitlin May and Orlady each finished with one hit.
Incline improved to 2-4 overall as Truckee fell to 1-6.
The Highlanders are scheduled to play at Virginia City on Tuesday and against the Ruby Mountain League’s West Wendover, Battle Mountain and White Pine on Friday and Saturday. Truckee plays at Quincy on Tuesday and hosts Elko on Saturday.
