Truckee baseball | Wolverines win league series against Dayton
May 8, 2014
The Truckee baseball team took two of three games from visiting Dayton in a Division I-A league series Thursday and Friday.
Truckee improved to 6-15 in league as Dayton fell to 7-14.
Bradley VanSchoonhoven tossed a complete-game shutout to lead the Wolverines to a 2-0 win in the series opener Thursday. The next day, Dayton rallied late to deal the hosts a 12-9 loss in Game 1 of their doubleheader. Truckee then bounced back to earn a 6-5 win in the series finale.
VanSchoonhoven was sharp on Thursday. The sophomore right-hander scattered seven hits and walked one in an efficient outing that required only 74 pitches. His defense helped him out with several nice plays, including a highlight diving catch by senior Thor Retzlaff in center field.
VanSchoonhoven's counterpart, Michael Selmi, was nearly as good. He limited the Wolverines to just five hits and did not walk a batter in a complete-game effort.
The Wolverines made their hits count, as they pushed across a run in the second inning and another in the fourth with RBIs from Ty Vaio and Teagan Pado, both of whom doubled.
In addition to his diving catch, Retzlaff had two hits, including a double, and scored both runs. VanSchoonhoven contributed a hit as well.
The Wolverines carried their momentum into Game 1 of Friday's twin bill, scoring seven runs in the second inning and leading 8-4 after five innings behind a strong start by Vaio.
But the Dust Devils took over the lead with a six-run sixth inning before adding two more in the seventh. Truckee pushed across a run in the bottom of the seventh but could not add on.
Truckee chased Dayton starter Michael Dieneman in the bottom of the fourth after an RBI single by Vaio extended the lead to 8-3. Dayton relievers Spencer Alexander and Cole Hummel limited the hosts to just one run over the final three innings as Dayton escaped with the win.
The Wolverines had nine hits in the contest, including six during their big second inning, in which they sent 12 hitters to the plate.
Junior Johnny Spaich led the way with a 3-for-5 performance with three RBIs and two runs. Vaio drive in two runs on two hits, while VanSchoonhoven had two hits and an RBI, and Gavin Broad, Miles Guiragossian, and Teagan Pado each had a hit and RBI, with Pado driving a double off the wall. Retzlaff was 3-for-4 with a run, Mike Jones had two hits, and Cameron Hollabaugh had one hit.
Pado, playing third base, made a couple of nice plays on hot shots.
Jack Phillips led the Dust Devils with four hits, including a home run and double, and five RBIs. Peter Scott also homered and finished with three RBIs. Dayton had 17 hits.
Truckee sophomore JJ Bellon started and picked up the win in the nightcap. He allowed five runs (four earned) on 10 hits and three walks while striking out five. Miles Guiragossian pitched a scoreless inning in relief.
The game was tightly contested, with the score knotted at 1 after three innings and the Dust Devils answering a four-run Truckee fourth with three runs of their own in the fifth. Dayton tied the score once more with a run in the sixth, but Truckee scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the inning and held on for the win.
The Wolverines managed seven hits off of three different Dayton pitchers. Seven Truckee players contributed a hit apiece, while Spaich, VanSchoonhoven, Vaio, Guiragossian and Retzlaff each had an RBI.
Truckee is scheduled to end the regular season with a three-game league series against visiting Fernley on Friday (3 p.m.) and Saturday (11 a.m., 1 p.m.).
