Truckee plays a league game at Sparks on Thursday and a nonleague game at Reno on Dec. 28. The Wolverines’ home opener isn’t until Jan 3 against Fallon.
The Truckee boys basketball team fell behind early and never recovered in a 52-45, league-opening loss at South Tahoe on Friday.
The Vikings opened the game with a 9-0 run. The rally was fueled by defensive pressure, Truckee turnovers and a string of crowd-rousing baskets by guards Kirby David and Jared Fajman.
South Tahoe maintained its lead the entire game. The Vikings (1-4 overall, 1-0 league) were up 14-9 at the end of the first quarter, 27-15 at halftime and 41-27 at the end of the third.
Truckee (2-2, 0-1) clawed back in the fourth quarter but could never close in beyond South Tahoe’s seven-point lead at the end of the game.
“Basically, we didn’t handle the pressure very well or show enough poise,” Truckee coach Sky Nelson said of his team’s performance.
Nick Oberriter led the Wolverines offensively with a game-high 24 points. Teagan Pado scored seven and Chase Vankirk scored six.
South Tahoe had a more-rounded offensive showing.
Fajman and Dakoda Baca led the Vikings in scoring with 11 points each. David finished with nine and Harry Moses with eight, while Denzel Perez scored five.
“We wanted to put the pressure on and the kids did a great job of that,” South Tahoe coach Joby Cefalu said. “We generated a lot of points off our press and we’ll continue to do that all season long.”
