Truckee basketball | Girls return from Silver State Slam
January 7, 2014
The Truckee girls basketball team dropped four games against mostly large schools in the Silver State Slam tournament in Reno last week.
The Wolverines opened the tournament Thursday with a 51-41 loss to Division I Spanish Springs.
They followed with a 53-31 loss to Division I Hug on Friday and a 33-26 loss to Pacific Grove (Calif.) the same day. They ended the tournament with a 54-24 loss to defending Division III champion Pershing County on Saturday.
"The tournament definitely defined our priority list for getting ready for the season," said Truckee coach Dave Shalvis. "It made my list of things to work on very clear. We need a higher output of points, we need to make our shots, and we need to stay within ourselves."
Shalvis said the Wolverines played well against Spanish Springs, matching the Cougars point for point for three quarters. But they never quite recovered from the opening quarter, in which Spanish Springs jumped out to a 21-10 lead.
Sophomore Anais Fay led Truckee with 14 points, while Kaylee Neill and Sydney Mock scored eight points apiece, and Lauren Peak had seven.
Mock scored a team-high eight points against Hug, and Fay and Marcelle Reynaud each contributed six points.
Neill was the high point against Pacific Grove, putting in 13 points against the physical California team.
"We're still learning how to play against the larger, more aggressive teams," Shalvis said.
Neill also scored 13 against Pershing County to lead the Wolverines. Fay added six points.
Truckee (2-5 overall, 2-0 league) is scheduled to host a Division I-A game against Fallon on Friday at 6 p.m. The Wolverines then travel to Lowry on Saturday and host North Valleys on Monday and Spring Creek next Friday.
