TRUCKEE, Calif. — What a difference a week makes. After a heartbreaking one-point loss to Spring Creek at Regionals, the Truckee High School girls cross-country team turned it around this past Saturday in Las Vegas and won by one point over Spring Creek to recapture the Division 3A Nevada State Championship, 35 to 36.

It was the third state title for the Truckee girls in four years.

The boys team also impressed, tying for third place in points (81) with S.E.C.T.A., in their first team appearance since 2012. Spring Creek won with 38 points and Elko took 2nd with 68 points.

For the girls, senior captain Brenna Wapstra-Scott won the individual state championship title in a commanding fashion by over 15 seconds in 19:07.

Spring Creek¹s Rylie Lusk, who narrowly beat Wapstra-Scott for the regional crown the previous week, finished in 2nd, followed closely by two more Truckee girls, Claire Lang-Ree in 3rd (19:25) and Isabella Terrazzas in 4th (19:31).

Also scoring points for Truckee were Lily Robertson in 15th (20:23) and Syra Fillat in 18th (20:46). Carrie Bradley finished in 20th (21:17) and Amanda Rae in 28th (21:42) in the field of 58 runners.

“Losing to Spring Creek  by one point at regionals was painful,” explained assistant coach Diana Yale. “The girls were determined to beat them at state. Winning a state title takes a little luck and that extra, mental edge. They brought that edge to the start line for the win.”

Head Coach Rob McClendon agreed.

“The girls had some sickness over the past week so it was very unclear what kind of the performances we were going to have,” he said. “But athletes like Brenna, Claire, Izzy stepped up taking three out of the top four spots. It was a true team effort and they believed in themselves in captured their seniors third state title of their careers.”

On the boys side, senior captain Ian Smith medaled with his 7th place finish in 16:45, with Calin Laine right behind him in 8th place, also in 16:45.

Other Truckee point scorers included Hudson Verbeck in 15th place (17:17), Ids Propstra in 34th (18:08) and Jordan Guldman in 40th (18:29). David Delicandro finished in 46th (18:54) and KC Larkins in 53th (19:37).

“They are a very young team which will see a huge improvement next year with a lot of athletes returning,” McClendon said of the Truckee boys.

Not only are Truckee cross-country runners winners on the field, they are also a success in the classroom. Both the boys and girls teams brought home the Academic Team award, by achieving the highest average GPA in the state amongst all Division 3A cross country teams.
