Lakers shooting for state
The North Tahoe golf team will compete in the Northern Division III regional championship tournament at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course at Stateline on Thursday. The top three teams and top five individuals from non-qualifying teams from the tournament will advance to the state championship in Pahrump on May 21-22.
Truckee golfers Cody Tilton and Jordan Fereira, both juniors, will represent the Wolverines individually in the Division I-A state championship tournament in Pahrump next week based on their final regular-season scores.
The top three Northern teams and top six individuals from non-qualifying teams qualified for the state championship, which will be contested Wednesday and Thursday, May 21-22, over the 6,640- to 7,082-yard Mountain Falls Golf Club.
Truckee finished fourth as a team and one spot away from qualifying for the state tournament, posting an average season score of 451. Lowry (394.7), Elko (422.4) and Spring Creek (436.7) advanced as the top three teams from the North.
They’ll square off against the top two teams from the Southern Division I-A, which will hold a regional tournament May 12-13, as well as the top five individuals from non-qualifying teams.
Tilton finished seventh overall in the regular-season standings with a season average of 79.4, while Fereira made the state cut with a season average of 84.2. They’ll be joined individually by Fernley’s Justice Akerson (80.2), South Tahoe Tre Charrette (81) and Connor Shaw (85.6), and Fallon’s Jeff Evett (85.4).
Lowry’s Ethan Gray was league MVP with a low average of 71.6. He was trailed by teammates Andrew Mendoza (74.8) and Josh Shaver (77.6), Elko’s Esaac Cordova (77.6) and Cauy Mead (77.6) and Lowry’s Chris Mendoza (78.2). Tilton’s seventh-place finish placed him on the All-League first team.
In the final league tournament of the season, hosted by Truckee at Old Greenwood Golf Course on Thursday, Lowry took the win with a team score of 403.
The Buckaroos were followed by Elko at 449, Spring Creek at 455 and Truckee at 457. Fernley (471) was fifth, followed by South Tahoe (478), Sparks (504), Dayton (526) and Fallon (528).
Tilton led the Wolverines while tying Gray and Andrew Mendoza with a 76 for tournament medalist honors.
Brandon Flora carded a 93, Cameron Rice 97, Ethan Gotts 99 and Sam Willis 108.
