Truckee golf | Wolverines looking to contend for state berth
April 1, 2014
Truckee boys golf coach Kevin Waters has reason to be excited.
For the first time in several years, the Wolverines have a legitimate shot at earning a state championship berth, led by three returning players and a capable junior transfer.
"The team is gelling very well and should be very competitive this season and for years to come," Waters said … "Along with the strong returners, there is a large core group of motivated freshmen looking to build the program for the future."
Juniors Jordan Fereira and Brandon Flora and sophomore Sean Bokinskie return as solid players for the Wolverines, while Waters expects transfer Cody Tilton to contribute to Truckee's success as well.
Also on Truckee's sizable roster are juniors Patrick MacAuley and Jake Lahr, sophomore Ethan Gotts, and eight freshmen — Peter Vaio, Airon Yarbrough, Gordon Critz, Christian Penrose, Tyler Van Enoo, Aaron Bokinskie, Cameron Rice and Sam Willis.
So far the Wolverines rank sixth in the competitive Northern Division I-A after one tournament. Lowry led the way with a dominant performance in the first tourney. The Buckaroos, which swept the top three spots individually and won the tournament with a collective score of 373 to second-place Elko's 396, were followed by Spring Creek (407), Fernley (432), South Tahoe (443), Truckee (444), Fallon (455), Dayton (515) and Sparks (535).
Fereira led Truckee and tied for 12th individually by shooting an 80. Tilton fired an 83, Flora 86, Yarbrough 93, Lahr 102 and Vaio 108. Lowry's Ethan Gray earned tournament medalist honors with a 71.
Waters hopes for the weather to clear up so his team can get back to work at Ponderosa Golf Course in Truckee, as opposed to traveling to Reno for practice.
"The extra time spent on the golf course practicing rather than driving to Reno will certainly help the team gear up for the competitive season ahead," he said. "Any opportunity we have to be on green grass is beneficial for the program."
