The Truckee High School track squads traveled to Fallon to participate in the 45th annual Fallon Elks invitational on Saturday, March 25. Truckee competed against 36 teams from multiple different NIAA divisions.
The girls squad placed fifth overall and first among D3-A competition.
“Both teams showed depth in both track and field events, and being able to have so many events represented will give us more success in championship meets,” said Truckee coach Diana Yale.
Wulfe Retzlaff broke an 11-year-old school record in shotput, throwing a distance of 44-00.25, placing ninth overall. Retzlaff’s throw earned him fifth place in D3-A statewide.
Other top performances included Brenna Wapstra-Scott’s first place showing in the 800-meter run (2:20.48) and third place in the 1,600-meter run (5:19.16), which is the top D3-A time statewide this season. Carrie Bradley was right behind Wapstra-Scott in the 1,600, finishing fourth (5:24.75).
Cole Harrity finished 16th in the 200-meter dash (24.18), Teliz Manahan finished 16th in the 400-meter dash (54.47) and Zack Barta finished 11th in the 800 (2:08.36) and in the 1,600 (4:41.23).

The 4×400-meter girls relay team of Curtis, Bradley, Monson and Wapstra-Scott finished fifth in 4:17.84. The 4×100 boys relay team of Retzlaff, Rivera, Manahan, and Harrity finished sixth in 46.55.
On the field, throwers Sara Sawyer and Marlena Montano registered top performances in the shot put. Sawyer finished 17th (27-08.50), while Montano finished 23rd (26-06.00). Abby Baier finished 15th in triple jump (31-02.25) and 16th in long jump (14-06.00), while Natalie Lang-Ree finished ninth in pole vault (8-00.00).
“Overall, the team is showing great spirit, energy and enthusiasm. We are looking forward to running on our new track when the snow melts, since training in the halls, on the roads and in the gym has been challenging,” Yale said. “Despite these challenges, we are still doing well and improving. Yet, having access to all the field events and the new all-weather track will have a huge difference in our results. I think everybody is looking forward to being able to use the new facility.”
Next up for Truckee is the April 1 Reed Sparks Rotary Invitational.
Sara Sawyer is a student, as well as a writer and photographer, at Truckee High School.
