Truckee Minor Renegades earn comeback win in tournament finale

Special to the Sun

The Truckee Renegades converted six hits into eight runs in the sixth inning of their final game of pool play Thursday. The come-from-behind victory was the team’s sole win in the postseason tournament hosted by Washoe Little League at South Valleys Sports Complex in Reno.

Despite Thursday’s win over Carson City, 14-10, the Truckee Renegades saw the team they just beat with the same record, 1-2, take the fourth and final spot to the championship round. Carson City advanced based on fewer runs allowed and not head-to-head competition, which brought an end to the Truckee Renegades play in the tournament.

The Truckee Renegades are a group of 9- and 10-year-olds selected from Truckee Little League’s Minor Division. The tournament brought together similar select teams from Reno, Sparks, Carson City and other nearby areas.

The Truckee team lost to Sparks Centennial Little League and Carson Valley Little League on Monday and Tuesday, respectively.

Truckee’s win Thursday demonstrated the ability of the team to rebound from those previous losses and finish strong.

Jackson Ellermeyer was the winning pitcher. Ellermeyer struck out three and got five other batters to hit for outs in his 2 2/3 innings of work. Ellermeyer came to the mound after starter Lucas Kratz pitched for 3 1/3 innings and had to be removed from when he reached the 75-pitch maximum for a 10-year-old pitching in a Little League game.

Right fielder Evan Loring and shortstop Soren Kraus led the offense for Truckee. Loring went 3-for-5 from the plate with a leadoff single in the first inning, a two-RBI double in the fifth and another base hit in the sixth inning. Kraus hit a pitch into the right center field fence and hustled for a triple in the fourth inning. He then hit a two-RBI single in the sixth inning. Both Loring and Kraus scored twice.

Truckee’s defense was led by Ellermeyer, who made an unassisted out while playing at first base and then put out three more runners from the mound. The four putouts were in addition to his three strikeouts. Catcher Armand Baldwin played shortstop for one inning and threw out two runners at first from that position. Kratz had two putouts to first from the mound. Kraus fielded a grounder from his shortstop position and tossed the ball to second base for an out. He also caught a fly ball when he was playing center field for one inning.

Other players who contributed to Thursday’s win and represented Truckee in the postseason tournament included second baseman Damon Parisi, left fielder Garrett Kirk, second baseman George Skaff, left fielder Heath Fellows, right fielder Jake Tedsen, third baseman Joey Panelli and catcher Tavin Hamilton.
