Truckee soccer | Boys fall from first with loss at Sparks

Staff report

Home turf won out in the Truckee-Sparks soccer rivalry this regular season.

Five weeks after Truckee dealt Sparks its only loss of the season, 1-0 in Truckee, the host Railroaders got their revenge while handing the Wolverines their only loss by the same 1-0 score Friday.

The result lifted Sparks (13-1) into first place in the Northern Division I-A standings, two points ahead of Truckee (12-1-1).

The Wolverines' one tie on the year, which will likely make the difference between a No. 1 and No. 2 regional playoff seed, came against Lowry to open the season, as Truckee sat a significant number of starters as punishment for an incident last year.

On Thursday Truckee avenged that now-crucial 5-5 tie at Lowry with a 6-0 rout over the visiting Buckaroos.

Senior Rolando Zarate initiated the scoring with a goal assisted by Thomas Arnstein early in the contest. Leo Villa scored next, assisted by David Martinez, while Alex Colomenares put in the first of his two goals unassisted to push the lead to 3-0.

Arnstein got in on the scoring off an assist from Colomenares, Jose Gonzalez scored Truckee's fifth goal assisted by Villa and Colomenares rounded out the scoring.

Against the Railroaders, Sparks freshman Jesus Partida netted the game's only score in the 36th minute when he headed in a shot over a charging Gabriel Serna, Truckee's goalie. The teams battled toe-to-toe the entire way, with many near scores on both sides.

Truckee and Sparks each have two regular-season games remaining. Truckee plays Fernley (4-9-0) and Fallon (6-5-2), and Sparks plays Fallon and South Tahoe (9-3-0). The top four teams advance to the regional tournament, which is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8-9, in Fallon.

Truckee's girls, meanwhile, defeated Lowry 4-1 on the road Thursday to improve to 10-2-1 in league play. Stats were not immediately available.
