Truckee track | Robust Wolverines squad off to strong start
March 21, 2013
Just two years ago, the Truckee High track and field team roster consisted of eight athletes. Last year, the team more than tripled in size to 28. This year, the team has managed to double in size again, becoming the largest sports team on campus with 60 student-athletes participating.
"With this many athletes, we are hoping to have some depth and coverage in all events to score points," said Truckee head coach Diana Yale.
In their first two Mount Rose League meets the past two weekends at Sparks, the Wolverines did not disappoint, registering 22 first-place finishes, and an additional 22 second- and third-place finishes, yielding a total of 44 podium finishes.
In the opening meet on March 9, Truckee was one of five teams participating, along with Sparks, North Tahoe, Whittell and Excel Christian.
Despite the fact that it was the team's first time on an actual track this season, Truckee dominated top spots in all boys and girls sprints, including wins by sophomore Eli Delaunay (100-meter dash), senior Adam Morgan (200 and 400), sophomore Tareyn Ryan (100) and Quinn Parker (200 and 400).
In distance events, sophomore Gabrielle Rinne won the 1,600 by a 40-second margin. Truckee also dominated the relay events, with both the boys and girls taking first place in the 4×400 and the 4×800. In field events, freshman Trevor McWhinney took top honors in the high jump.

A week later, two teams were added to the original mix, South Tahoe and Incline, which provided a much larger field of competitors. Still, Truckee registered impressive results.
Senior Jake Pettit dominated in the 100, shaving nearly a second off his personal record with a 10.94. Parker improved her 200 time from the previous week, easily winning by more than a second in 26.35. Junior Tobias Ziegler won the 400 by nearly three seconds in 53.24. And Rinne won the 800 by nearly 10 seconds, in 2:26.31.
Relays were equally successful, with Truckee boys winning the 200, 400 and 800 relays and the Truckee girls did the same with the 400m and 800m relays. In field events, senior Javier Virrey took top honors in both the long jump and the triple jump.

"It's a hard-working, talented group of athletes, and also a young team," Yale said. But with the sheer numbers that have turned up to participate, help is needed. "We are looking for coaching help in field events to round out the coaching staff."
Next up on the schedule in the 41st Annual Fallon Elks Invitational on Saturday, with 28 teams from all NIAA divisions participating.
