After several meets in California, the Truckee track and field team returned to Northern Nevada for the Reed Sparks Rotary Invitational at Reed High School last weekend to face their NIAA competition.

Between the girls and boys teams, there were a record 65 season-bests registered, including 10 podium finishes.

While the 25 teams were divided up into large school and small school divisions for team awards, the “small school” Truckee girls were the top point scorers in both categories, winning the meet with 93 points to runner-up McQueen’s 90.33 points. The boys fared also well against their Division I-A competition, finishing fourth.

“In the past, we’ve usually been strong in the sprints and distance events. But this year, we’ve been building in the field events with more volunteer coaching and getting kids to diversify to round out the team,” said Truckee coach Diana Yale. “Scoring points in field events will be integral to the overall team place in the postseason.”

Top performers among the girls included Quinn Parker’s win in the 400-meter dash (58.78), and second-place finishes in the 100 (12.85) and 200 (26.67). Parker also registered a new personal record (PR) in the preliminary heat of the 200 with a time of 25.83, which is the 20th fastest time among California seniors this season.

Middle distance specialist Gabrielle Rinne raced outside of her signature events, running the first 3,200 of her track career, finishing second (11:41.64), and on the other end of the spectrum, she finished third in the 400 (60.18). Skyler Flora finished second in the 1,600 (5:18.62).

The younger girls on the team also fared well. Freshman Claire Lang-Ree finished fourth in the 1,600 (5:29.18), sophomore Olivia Yale finished sixth in the 800 (2:31.17) and freshman Syra Fillat finished 10th in the 3,200 (13:09.95).

The girls also dominated in the relays, with three podium finishes. The distance medley relay (DMR) won its race in 13:22.76, with Flora (1,200), Marlena Montano (400), Rinne (800) and Carrie Bradley (1,600). The 4 x 400 team of Parker, Rinne, Julia Veliquette and Brenna Wapstra-Scott also won in 4:06.81. The young 4 x 800 team, meanwhile, consisting of Fillat, Veliquette, Lang-Ree and Yale, placed second in 10.08.77.

Standouts in the field events included freshman Hayley Thomas finishing third in the triple jump (32-04.00) and senior Cassandra Sawyer’s top-20 finish in the discus (73-06).

The boys team continued to gain experience and improved in both individual and team events.

The top individual performance among the boys was Colin Deurlington’s fifth-place finish in the 800 with a time of 2:06.23, while Noah Oberriter finished sixth in the 3,200 in 10.04.93 and sixth in 1,600 in 4:47.03. Nick Morgan posted a time of 11.24.40 and Holden Reed 12.26.57 in the 3,200.

The 400 saw Truckee athletes Eli Yale and Deurlington finish neck-and-neck in 12th and 13th place, posting times of 53.53 and 53.56, respectively, while Tanner Sawyer was 15th in the 40 in 5.34 and Baldo Ramirez was 18th in 6.22.

The relay teams continued to shine, as the boys 4×800 squad of Oberriter, Deurlington, Nathan Ariza and Eli Yale finished fourth with a time of 8:33.88, and the 4 x 400 relay of Deurlington, Yale, Carson Cottel and Tanner Sawyer placed ninth in 3:50.52. The race was Cottel’s and Sawyer’s first foray in the 400.

“Our boys 4 x 400 and 4 x 800 relays are starting to come together, and we’re hoping athletes really step up into these relay opportunities,” coach Yale said.

The DMR relay team of Morgan, Max Barta, Hudson Verbeck and Simeon Murphy finished 11th with a time of 12:19.84.

In the field events, Truckee continued to improve with Ramirez leading the charge. Ramirez threw a season best 88 feet, 11 inches in the discus and 34 feet, 6 inches in the shot put. Riley Welch threw the discus 71 feet, 6 inches, followed by Connor Jacobs at 60 feet, 11 inches.
