2017 Summer Gear Guide: For Men
From sleeping bags to GoPro cameras to trail guides — and just about everything else in between — our summer 2017 gear guide has a little bit of everything for everyone. Check out this year’s offerings, available at a variety of retail outlets across the Tahoe-Truckee region. Happy Summer!
1. Kelty Sunshade
The Tahoe summer sun can be relentless. A good sunshade is easy way to protect yourself and family from the heat. It’s also useful when staking your claim on busy beaches. Kelty’s sturdy new design has a wall on one side to protect from those afternoon breezes. It’s also light enough you won’t be exhausted from just carrying it to the sand.
Available at Squaw Valley Sports Shop, Olympic Valley 530-583-3356
2. Tahoe SUP Alpine Explorer SUP
Inflatable stand-up paddleboards started out as unwieldy blocks of rubber. In recent years, they’ve morphed into performance-geared touring machines. They’re easy to pack, travel with and inflate. With the region’s many exciting paddling destinations, Tahoe SUP’s sleek, inflatable option is a smart addition to the gear shed.
Available at Tahoe City Kayaks, Tahoe City, 530-581-4336
3. Hydro Flask 64 oz. Growler
With breweries popping up in Lake Tahoe like spring wildflowers, you’ll need a good jug to store your favorites. Hydro Flask is well known for its sleek water bottles and coffee containers, but the company also has a full line of products directed at beer and spirits.
Available at Tahoe Mountain Sports, Truckee, 530-536-5200
4. Redington Topo Combo Fly Rod
Whether it’s big browns in the Truckee River or golden trout high in Desolation, Lake Tahoe is surrounded by streams and small lakes that have some of the world’s best fly fishing. Redington makes getting started in the sport easy. Its rod and reel combinations have everything you’ll need to land a big one.
Available at Tahoe Fly Fishing Outfitters, South Lake Tahoe, 530-541-8208
5. Speedo snorkel set
Lake Tahoe’s underwater world is just waiting to be explored. From huge sunken barges to crawdads, there’s submerged stuff to see all over the lake. Having a good snorkel handy is a local’s secret. If you don’t have a wetsuit, you might want to wait until July or August when the water warms up, though.
Available at Sports LTD., South Lake Tahoe, 530-542-4000
6. Chaco Flip Ecotread
Lake Tahoe in the summer is sandal heaven, but not for flip-flops that can’t handle a little granite scrambling or a misstep on the wrong side of a sugar pine cone. Tahoe-goers need a burly, toes-free option. Chaco is renowned for its heavy-duty sandals, and the new Flip brings a casual feel to the company’s uber-functional footwear line.
Available at Heavenly Sports, South Lake Tahoe, 775-586-6104
7. Ruffwear Commuter Dog Pack
This gear guide often features products for Tahoe’s dog-loving set. But Ruffwear’s Commuter is hands down the most stylish pet product we’ve come across. The Commuter will make your canine look cooler than you on the trail. And, yes, it has enough pockets for bowl, food and a squeaky toy or two.
Available at Dog. Dog. Cat., South Lake Tahoe, 530-541-2322
8. Volcom Lido Solid Mod Boardshorts
Boardshorts are pretty much the official uniform of summer at Lake Tahoe. Volcom’s latest offering are as good as any. The stretchy Lido is made from fiber created with recycled plastic bottles. The shorts’ cinch-fly ensures you won’t end up in awkward situation after super-manning off Rooster Rock.
Available at The Village, South Lake Tahoe, 530-541-4444
9. Tahoe Timber Fallen Leaf sunglasses
The Tahoe-based lifestyle company has developed a line of products that are not only made with sustainable and renewable resources, but also matches the natural landscape to a tee. The Fallen Leaf sunglasses combine a bamboo frame with polarized lenses. The best part? They float.
Available at tahoetimber.com
10. Badger Sunscreen Cream
Sunburn will ruin your vacation, especially the classic scorched tomato burn that Lake Tahoe’s altitude offers. Yes, there are a million sunscreens out there. A lot of them don’t work, are bad for you, or are harsh on the environment. Badger’s Sunscreen Cream scored among the highest of sunscreens tested by the nonprofit Environmental Working Group.
Available at New Moon Natural Foods, Truckee, 530-587-7426
