TAHOE CITY, Calif. — Even though it’s been open since the day after Thanksgiving, the Tahoe City Winter Sports Park will officially kick off the 2015-16 season next week.

The park is hosting a community kickoff party from 5-7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 14, featuring free cross-country skiing and rentals, free snowshoeing and rentals, and free sledding and saucers.

The party will also feature a Human Bowling Tournament, starting at 6 p.m. — and, as is the theme Monday, featuring free entry (limited to those 18 and older). Also, free food and drink specials will be offered at the park’s bar during Monday Night Football.

Last winter season, the park never opened due to lack of snow. This year, considering a slew of small storms recently — coupled with a larger one forecast to hit the region Thursday — Tahoe City Public Utility Disitrct officials were able to open the park on Nov. 27.

Depending on weather, operations will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m, Fridays and Sundays, and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturdays through March 27. During holiday periods, the park is intended to be open daily from Dec. 21, 2015, to Jan. 3, 2016, and Feb. 13 to Feb. 15.

Further, a $5-$10 donation is requested for trail use on non-operating days.

While much of Monday’s community party features free perks, there are varying costs for ski, snowshoe and sled rentals.

The park is located at 251 North Lake Blvd., at the Tahoe City Golf Course. For details, visit wintersportspark.com or call 530-583-1516.
