Your Tahoe Weekend: SnowFest! begins, fireworks at Squaw, Penn and Teller and more highlight top 10 events

TAHOE-TRUCKEE, Calif. — Below are the Sierra Sun’s picks for the Top 10 events to check out this snowy weekend at Truckee and Lake Tahoe.

1. SnowFest! 2016 kicks off

The 35th annual SnowFest! kicks off Friday at North Lake Tahoe, with fun events all weekend long, including Friday’s Bridgetender Rib Fest at 5 p.m., the annual Tahoe City parade at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, and the Gar Woods Polar Bear Swim at 2 p.m. Saturday, among many more.

Where: Various locations across North Lake Tahoe

2. Free backcountry demo day at Donner Summit

Tahoe Sports Hub and North American Ski Training Center is hosting a free backcountry demo day Friday on Donner Summit. The event will offer participants the chance to try out the newest technology in backcountry ski and snowboard equipment on a short skin track in the backcountry, as well as learn avalanche safety basics and practice.

When: 9 a.m.-2 p.m.Friday, March 4

Where: Former location of Sugar Bowl Academy, Donner Summit

Cost: Free


3. Everyone Is Dirty at Moody’s

Led by frontwoman Sivan Lioncub’s exotic electric-violin antics and emotionally charged performance, Everyone Is Dirty will bring its eclectic rock sound to downtown Truckee for a two-night stand at Moody’s Bistro, Bar & Beats.

When: 8:30 p.m. Friday-Saturday, March 4-5

Where: Moody’s Bistro, Bar & Beats

Cost: Free


4. Lucky & DjjD at Crystal Bay Casino

Put on your dancing shoes and head to the North Shore for a night of electronic music spun by Lucky and DjjD at the Crystal Bay Casino.

When: 11 p.m. Saturday, March 5

Where: Crystal Bay Casino Red Room

Cost: Free


5. Groove Foundry at Bar of America

Tahoe City-based soul/jazz outfit Groove Foundry, featuring a trio of powerhouse horns over a funky rhythm section, will perform back-to-back free shows this weekend in Truckee.

When: 8:30 p.m. Friday-Saturday, March 4-5

Where: Bar of America, Truckee

Cost: Free


6. Penn and Teller at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe

Known for their outrageous blending of magic and comedy, Penn and Teller will bring their show that skewers tradition hat-and-rabbit magic tricks with provocative, hilarious and often, amazing results to the South Shore.

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 4

Where: Harrah’s Lake Tahoe, Stateline

Cost: $70.64 plus fees


7. Community Snowshoe Hike at Diamond Peak

Diamond Peak Ski Resort will host a community snowshoe hike on Friday. The hike, which is three miles round trip, encourages exercising in an intergenerational setting for ages 9 and older, and includes after-hour access to Diamond Peak Snowflake Lodge, s’mores and hot cocoa.

When: 5 p.m. Friday, March 4

Where: Meet at Diamond Peak’s Base Lodge Deck

Cost: $13 adults, $10 ages 55 and older


8. Fireworks at Squaw Valley | Alpine Meadows

Squaw Valley is hosting a free performance by Space Cowboys on the KT Deck Friday. Then on Saturday, the Space Cowboys will lead a deck party, finishing with the Cal Aggie Marching Band at 5:30 p.m., with a laser show and fireworks after

9. This Charming Band at Hard Rock Lake Tahoe

San Francisco-based This Charming Band, a tribute band of The Smiths, will unspool The Smiths’ catalog while recreating the energy of the band’s live performance on Saturday on the South Shore.

When: 9 p.m. Saturday, March 5

Where: Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Lake Tahoe, Stateline

Cost: $15 (includes one drink)


10. Dancing with the Tahoe Stars at MontBleu Resort

Watch local Tahoe stars, such as Kelly Shanahan and Jerry Bindel, and professional dancers perform their best moves in Dancing with the Tahoe Stars, presented by the Tahoe Arts Project.

When: 5:30 p.m. Saturday, March 5

Where: MontBleu Showroom, Stateline

Cost: $15-$45
