INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — Imagine hiking peacefully with a small group of friends across historic granite stones on Donner Summit, or maybe on soft forest duff overlooking Spooner Lake.

Suddenly magical dancers emerge from behind wide tree trunks. You hear a harp mixing with wind in the branches above you. A singer’s voice blends with sparkle on water. You walk farther, curious what creativity and natural beauty will inspire you around the next bend.

Every year, the nonprofit group Trails & Vistas brings artists, dancers and musicians to the Lake Tahoe region to engage the community in the art-making process with guided art hikes and a World Concert at Sand Harbor that are interactive with site specific artworks and performance.

This year, “The Journey Itself is Home” features a “trails and vistas” art hike theme, orchestrating art hikes at two locations, high on Donner Summit and along North Canyon Trail at Spooner Lake.

At each location, performances embrace the landscape of place, creating in each hike a unique experience that merges art performance, installation, words, and music with the majestic natural scenery of the Sierra.

Art Hike at Spooner Lake State Park

On Saturday, Sept. 10, explore human spirit, art, and nature in the spiritual place of the North Canyon Trail at Base Camp at Spooner Lake State Park in Nevada, located a few miles east of Incline Village on Highway 28.

This hike features the music of Todo Mundo Trio, who will also headline the World Concert at Sand Harbor with its six member band. The words of Santiago Orozco, the band’s singer, guitarist and songwriter, capture the heart and soul of what Trails & Vistas art hikes are all about.

Take a musical journey around the world from Paris to Tahoe, Japan to Spanish Rumba, along the three-mile earthen trail with a small hiking group of 20 people.

The journey starts with the soulful blues melodies of Kings Beach resident Peter Joseph Burtt. His music draws from many sources to inform his music and chronicle the years he spent living and studying with master musicians in Africa.

Much of his music is played on traditional instruments, notably the lute like Kora. Then experience ten more performance and art sites in aspen groves and golden meadows.

World Concert at Sand Harbor

Then on Saturday evening, Sept. 10, the “World Concert: A Peace Project of Truckee Tahoe” is planned for Sand Harbor State Park, located just east of Incline Village off Highway 28.

Bring a picnic and sit under the stars and listen to the opening performances include the soulful blues of Peter Joseph Burtt and the KingTide Band, inspirational sounds of Emily Tessmer and Kimeya singers, innovative jazz harpist Motoshi Kosako and three time Grammy Winner Paul McCandless, Jessica Fichot’s Quartet, and performance painting with Susie Alexander.

Los Angeles-based chanteuse/songwriter Fichot is a lot like her hometown of Paris: French at heart, but with a soul that’s truly international. Drawing from her multi-ethnic French / Chinese / American upbringing, her music takes the listener on a twisting journey out of the French chanson tradition, into the land of 1940’s Shanghai jazz, gypsy swing, international folk, and into the wilderness of her imagination.

Todo Mundo headlines the World Concert with its explosive world fusion, blending the musical flavors of Spanish Rumba, Reggae, Brazilian, Balkan and Middle Eastern styles into an irresistible groove. Todo Mundo was voted “Best World Music” band at the 2014 and 2015 San Diego Music Awards.
