TRUCKEE, Calif. — The nonprofit organization Girls on the Run International — a physical-activity based, positive youth development program that empowers girls in the third through eighth grades — is celebrating its 20th year.

What started with one council and 13 participants in Charlotte, N.C., and has grown to 225 councils from coast to coast that have served more than 1 million girls over the past 20 years.

Girls on the Run-Sierras, the local Girls on the Run council, was founded in 2007 and has served approximately 1,600 girls in the Ren-Tahoe region since its inception.

Girls on the Run strives to make its program available to as many girls as possible, and Girls on the Run-Sierras provided financial assistance through program scholarships to 43% of its participants in 2015.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary milestone, Girls on the Run-Sierras is hosting an open house at our new Reno office (140 Washington St.) on March 10 from 5-7 p.m.

The youth development program is led by trained volunteers who coach a team of 8-15 girls over a season. Each lesson follows the Girls on the Run curriculum, which balances physical activities with lessons focused on developing key life skills in young girls, including confidence, character, caring, connection and competence.

During the 10-week program, the girls continue to grow these skills and make a meaningful contribution to their community and society by creating and implementing a Community Impact Project.

Each Girls on the Run season culminates in a celebratory 5K running event where the girls find a tangible sense of accomplishment for their hard work and learn the power of goal-setting.

“With the commitment of our dedicated volunteers and supporters, the program has flourished and impacted many lives,” said Girls on the Run-Sierras Executive Director Danielle Rees. “We are inspired by the girls we have served and look forward to expanding our reach in the years to come.”

In Girls on the Run, the girls learn to recognize their unique abilities and to embrace what makes them one-of-a-kind.
