TAHOE CITY, Calif. — Boarding for Breast Cancer’s 11th annual Skate the Lake at Lake Tahoe on Aug. 14-15 was an unprecedented success, with almost 100 skaters raising more than $30,000 for the nonprofit’s education, prevention and support programs.

It was an amazing weekend filled with tons of fun and an overwhelming amount of love and support from the Tahoe community. B4BC team rider, Tahoe local and Olympic snowboarder, Elena Hight, even decided to hop on a skateboard to join in on the fun.

The weekend kicked off with a registration party at The Art Haus in Tahoe City. As skaters signed up for the weekend, they were treated to dancing and music by Greg Brown, Flip the Record, Actors Killed Lincoln and the local break dancing crew, as well as dinner provided by Moe’s BBQ, Mountain Valley Meats, The Bridgetender and Marty’s Cafe.

Raffles and a silent auction rounded out the night, getting people stoked for Saturday’s activities.

Saturday started bright and early with skaters pushing a total of 28 miles along the shores of Lake Tahoe. Some skated for loved ones, while others wanted to join in on the movement to support a healthy, active lifestyle.

Our top fundraiser this year was 12-year-old Katie Lyssand, who went door-to-door to local shops and businesses asking for their support of her fundraising campaign all while honoring several of her family members who have been impacted by cancer.

Katie’s incredible efforts alone raised more than $3,000 for the cause, and because of her dedication, Katie was awarded a GoPro Hero 4 and a new Tahoe Longboards skate deck.

Our second place fundraising honors went to the Jason and Lindsay Knight, who were participating in their 10th Skate the Lake and raised more than $2,500.

Also, the Knights’ 8-year old son, Colin, was the youngest rider to participate in the skate.

Rounding out the top three fundraisers was last year’s top fundraiser, Steve Gatlin, who raised more than $1,500!
