Tahoe Top 5: Bella Lago Aesthetic’s tips for preventing, treating skin damage

TRUCKEE, Calif. — As we make our way out of winter, keep in mind that "spring cleaning" applies to more than organizing the house and garage.

Skin care is important for men, women and young adults. Living in the Tahoe-Truckee area and leading an outdoor lifestyle means we are more exposed to extreme weather and conditions — not to mention being closer to the sun's rays at higher elevations — making it even more important to put skin care among the top of your health priorities.

Before coming up with your own skin care regimen, consider speaking with a professional to be sure you're using products that suit your own skin needs.

"It's your skin, what you face the world with, the one thing you have forever," said Michele Brock, an aesthetician of Bella Lago Aesthetics in Truckee with 20 years of experience. "It's really hard to cover up once you've done damage, and there are things you can do to take preventative steps or even fix existing damage."

Bella Lago Aesthetics hosted a "Spring into Clean Skin" event last week in order to educate locals and visitors on skin care and products, even offering mini-facials to attendees.

"I love educating people," said Andrea Gaffney, another aesthetician at the boutique beauty spa who has been caring for people's skin since 1995. "It's so important to take care of yourself to feel confident, and it is really important to understand your skin and the products you use."

The experts at Bella Lago Aesthetics recommended five easy tips for anyone who cares about the health of their skin. You may not realize that each lifestyle recommendation also directly affects your beautiful face — give the following tips a try, and your skin will thank you.

1. Maintain a healthy diet

You are what you eat — staying away from sugary, greasy and unhealthy foods is a great way to also improve your skin's appearance. A diet rich in fruit and vegetables like berries and kale will provide detoxifying effects for the skin.

2. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

Drinking plenty of water helps flush your skin as much as it does your system. Keeping in mind the golden rule of 8 glasses of water a day, consider mixing up your hydration routine by drinking green tea, which is a natural antioxidant and detoxifier for your skin. Infusing water with herbs and berries is an easy way to mix up flavor while adding nutrition, making it easy to keep well hydrated.

3. Wash your face every day

Men, women, teens, listen up — while it's best to wash your face at morning and at night, if you can commit to washing your face at least once each day you will be doing your skin a favor, long-term. The best time of day to wash is at nighttime, if only washing once. Use a cleanser that works for your skin type and if you really want to step-up your skin care game, apply moisturizer to your freshly cleaned face.

4. Always apply sunscreen

Even if it seems cloudy outside, even if you're only planning on being outside a short while, sunscreen should be part of everyone's daily routine. We live in such a gorgeous area, but it's important to protect your skin from harmful rays that will cause damage over time. Some people shy away from using sunscreen for its thick texture and white residue, but thankfully, most good products available today are light so they don't clog pores, and won't leave a zinc-streak.

5. Go to bed

Sleep is a great way to manage stress, recharge your body and also recharge your skin as it repairs itself overnight. Getting enough sleep is crucial for so many of our body's functions so do your best to get eight hours each night.

Oh, and also…

Apart from these tips, getting a facial every four to six weeks is a great way for men and women to properly treat breakouts, dryness, redness and any other imperfections.

During a facial, before applying any products to the skin the aestheticians first examine the client's skin under a super-bright magnifying lamp. They see further into the pores and customize each person's skin care with a unique treatment.

Treatments use various (and amazing smelling) creams and cleansers, which are applied to the face, neck and chest with soft facial brushes or sponges.

The aesthetician then performs any necessary extractions while keeping the client as comfortable as possible, following directly with an upper-body massage. The entire experience is designed to relax the client while also deep-cleaning the skin.
