Women and wellness unite at Granlibakken in Tahoe City
November 26, 2013
TAHOE CITY, Calif. — A tribe of women from near and far descended at the Women's Wellness Weekend, hosted by Granlibakken Resort, Nov. 9 and 10 for a weekend of education, dining, shopping, exercise and camaraderie.
The two-day event annually features speakers in a variety of health topics. One Saturday attendees were treated to Metahabilitaion: Turning Tragedy to Triumph by Joyce Mikal-Flynn, Ed. D, FNP, MS; Health of Your Skin: Inside and Out by Jennifer Janiga, MD; Introduction to Integrative Medicine by Robert Eslinger, DO, HMD and more.
Tim Schroeder, a Tahoe City chiropractic doctor, served as the event's master of ceremonies. He feels "living a balanced life enables you to reach your greatest potential in both professional and personal development."
After a day informative talks, luncheon with Jill Whisler, RD speaking about foods that fuel or fool, and an afternoon of Qi Gong, the evening closed with a shopping and sipping affair, with more than 20 local artisans and reps: jewelry designers, woolens, photography, authors, essential oils, make up, clothing reps and wine!
Sunday began with a buffet breakfast, and "Common Nutrient Deficiencies" by Christina Campbell, ND and Stephenie Riley, ND. The dynamic duo spoke of our food sources and the lack of nutrients therein, with increasing chronic disease in our population. These gals recommended several basics: fish oils and probiotics with a careful look at how they are processed.
Next up was Mel Pohl, MD, from the Las Vegas Recover Center, speaking about the Disease of Addiction. His presentation was all the more compelling, coming from a doctor who's "been there, done that." Addiction is often perceived as "mind over matter." False. Brain chemistry is different in addicts, with a cycle of loss of control, cravings, and the obsession of the mind. It is a progressive and fatal disease, but treatable.

The piece du resistance was Sunday's interactive health fair, with Eastern and Western practices blending for screenings and information, including biofeedback, chiropractic, make up, body talk, bone density screenings, and nutritional information.
