28th Christmas/Holiday Concert next week at Tahoe
November 27, 2013
It's a night of beautiful and entrancing music. The Sierra Nevada College Choir will present the 28th Annual Christmas/Holiday Concert on Thursday, Dec. 5, and Saturday, Dec. 7.
The concert is performed in St. Patrick's Episcopal Church in Incline Village. The festivities begin at 7 p.m. Music director and conductor, Donna Axton, promises a concert that ushers in the joy and exuberance and the peace that this season promises.
The musical program centers on two magnificent pieces of music. "Gloria" by Francis Poulenc is a joyful and exciting piece in a contemporary idiom. It shows Poulenc's sense of humor as well as his ability to create a sense of ethereal — maybe even heavenly — lightness. Anna Helwing brings her own angelic voice to the soprano solo in "Gloria."
The centerpiece of the second half of the concert is Conrad Susa's "Carols and Lullabies of the Southwest." This piece celebrates the rhythms and folk tunes of South America and Spain. Tom Letson is featured as the guitarist for the piece, and David Pierce and Kevin Beiswenger, are the featured singers.
Other seasonal tunes are included, with special performances by Marty, Suzanne, and Mariposa Gollery, Karen Colbert, Caroline Kaplan, Ken Todd, Caitlin Hamilton, Bill and Claire Roberts, Josii Johnson. The choir will be accompanied by Katie Lauder on piano and Jay Grauer on bass.
Tickets are available at The Potlatch, Handmade at the Lake (next to Wildflower Cafe) and the SNC Bookstore in Incline, and at The Store (Copies and More) in Tahoe City. Tickets are $12 advance sales, $15 at the door, and $10 for students and seniors.
