INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — The Sierra Nevada College Choir, under the direction of Donna Axton, will present the 30th annual Christmas/Holiday Concert this week.

Brass, percussion and keyboards will help the community usher in the season. For the first time, chorus members of have created a handbell choir to add sparkle and energy to the evening, and there will even be a chance for the audience to raise voices in song and join the chorus for a few seasonal favorites.

Highlighting the bill will be John Rutter's "Gloria," alternating soaring vocals with contemporary harmonies.

One of the most beloved contemporary composers, Rutter has called the dialog between brass section and the choir in the three-movement piece, "exalted, devotional and jubilant by turns."

The exuberant first movement establishes the joyful nature of the piece, while the dramatic second movement evokes medieval times reminiscent of chants and dissonant harmonies, closely followed by the third movement's triumphant conclusion.

Lisa Hoopes will be the featured soprano soloist. Classics by Mozart, Bruckner and Lvov round out the first act.
