Final Brubeck jazz concert is Friday at SNC
August 6, 2014
The acclaimed Brubeck Institute Summer Jazz Colony will hold its final performance on Friday in a free show from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at Patterson Hall at Sierra Nevada College.
The performance showcases 28 of the best high-school age jazz musicians from across the country and Australia and the U.K. They have spent the past week in an intensive educational program including master classes and advanced improvisation sessions with 16 leading jazz artist-educators.
"The Summer Jazz Colony represents an extraordinary learning opportunity for these students and it gives our entire community the chance to experience the future leaders of jazz," said SNC President Lynn Gillette. "Anyone who loves music will be stunned by the musical expertise and maturity of these young people."
Through its partnership with the University of the Pacific's Brubeck Institute, SNC is hosting the week-long 2014 Summer Jazz Colony. It's first time that the camp has been held outside of Stockton, Calif., and the first time it's included international students.
"These students are not just good, they are jaw-droppingly good; they have already reached a stunning level of proficiency and studied and worked with some of the biggest names in jazz," said Simon Rowe, executive director of the Brubeck Institute.
