Spring concert to feature music by Franz Schubert

Special to the Bonanza

In its 29th year, the SNC choir brings high quality musical productions to this community. The membership is drawn from Lake Tahoe’s North Shore, Truckee and Sierra Nevada College.

Sierra Nevada College Concert Choir, under the direction of Donna Roberts Axton, will present its 29th annual spring concert next month, featuring the works of Franz Schubert, including "Mass in G" and "Schubertiade."

The performances take place 7 p.m. Thursday, April 3, and Saturday, April 5, at St. Patrick's Episcopal Church in Incline Village.

Accompanied by a string ensemble, the chorus and soloists, including Lisa Hoopes, David Pierce and Kevin Beiswenger, will perform "Mass in G" as the centerpiece of this concert.

This mass, Schubert's second, was completed in 1815, at the tender age 18, and was composed in less than a week (March 2-7, 1815). Schubert only lived to be 31 years old.

Schubert was a rather shy fellow and did not promote his own music. However, he was befriended by many famous musicians of his time.

They would descend, en masse, on his home and sing while Franz played the piano. This type of party was called a "Schubertiade." The SNC Concert Choir is bringing their own version of this event to their friends in the community.

The additional soloists for the "Schubertiade" include Marty Gollery, Lorelei Van Peborgh, Caroline Kaplan, David Marelich, Karen Colbert and Marsha Tejeda.

Tickets are available at The Potlatch, Handmade at the Lake (by Wildflower Café), and Sierra Nevada College bookstore in Incline; and The Store in Tahoe City.

Choir members also have tickets for sale. Tickets are $12 presale, $15 at the door and $10 for students and seniors.
