VIDEO: Tahoe-Truckee outdoor summer concerts are tough to beat

TAHOE CITY, Calif. — Dirty Revival, a soul and funk band, rocked hundred of locals and visitors at Commons Beach in Tahoe City this past Sunday, July 24.

The act was part of the summer-long Concerts at Commons Beach series that offers outdoor, family-friendly — and free — music performances right off the shores of Lake Tahoe every Sunday. Acts generally go on at 4 p.m. and wrap up at 7 p.m.

This past Sunday, Portland, Ore.-based Dirty Revival drew such a vibrant dance party that at one point the lawn felt like it wasn't large enough.

Aside from the music, the female-fronted ensemble, which draws inspiration from Sir-Mix-A-Lot and Parliament Funkadelic, used its stage time to briefly touch on bigger issues in the world and mention the importance of being good to one another — all in front of an all-ages crowd who shared hula hoops and hugs.

The lead singer even brought her 3-year-old son to watch the show from in front of the stage.

Brian Collins, a Tahoe City resident, said that music in Tahoe City and in Truckee are two of his favorite things about Tahoe in the summer.

Residents Bob Candler and Wendy Klein, who came to Sunday's show, agreed, saying that attending the region's many free music events throughout the summer is one of their favorite things to do.

"Wednesday in Truckee, Tuesday in Squaw Valley, Sunday, here, Tahoe City, Friday in Kings Beach … what am I leaving out?" said Candler.

In terms of free outdoor shows at North Lake Tahoe and Truckee, she got them all right — on Tuesdays, Bluesdays takes place in the Village at Squaw Valley; on Wednesdays, the Truckee-Donner Recreation & Park District hosts free Music in the Park concerts at the Truckee River Regional Park "Salty" Gebhart Amphitheater; and on Fridays, start your weekend the right way with the free Music on the Beach series in Kings Beach. All three start at around 6 or 6:30 p.m.
