‘Bye, Bye Birdie’ premieres this weekend with Truckee Community Theater

Special to the Sun

TRUCKEE, Calif. — Truckee Community Theater will present the enormously popular Broadway musical comedy "Bye, Bye Birdie" at the Community Arts Center Auditorium in downtown Truckee this weekend and next weekend.

On May 27-28 and June 3-4, the Friday and Saturday shows are at 7 p.m. Sunday matinees on May 29 and June 5 are at 2 PM. The director is Courtney Simson.

"Bye Bye Birdie" concerns a fictional '50s rock and roll star, Conrad Birdie, who has just been drafted into the U.S. Army. Teen girls all over America are devastated!

Conrad's manager, Albert Peterson, imagines his career is over until his long-time secretary and fiancee, Rosie Alvarez, hatches a plan: Why not pick one lucky teenage girl to kiss Conrad goodnight on television the night before he reports for duty?

And what if Albert were to create a special song, "One Last Kiss", and Conrad sings it to that special little fan? Pretty 16-year-old Kim MacAfee of Sweet Apple, Ohio, is chosen, and Conrad, his manager and Rosie descend on Sweet Apple, throwing the town into complete comic chaos.

The show features entertaining, upbeat dance numbers like "Put On a Happy Face," "The Telephone Hour" and "A Lot of Livin' to Do."
