‘Every Day is a Journey’ earth-inspired art show Friday in Truckee

Special to the Sun

TRUCKEE, Calif. — Riverside Studios' art show "Every Day is a Journey" honors art in nature with paintings and sculpture inspired by Trails & Vistas, the annual interactive art hike that features ephemeral art installation and performance along a nature trail.

With that in mind, Riverside Studios' First Friday Gallery Reception will take place from 5-8 p.m. Friday, May 6, in downtown Truckee, where you can meet artists Angelique Benicio, Brooke Bishop, Cathee van Rossem St. Clair and Nancy Tieken Lopez, and listen to Jazz Harpist Motoshi Kosako.

Collaborate with nature

Tieken Lopez, founder of Trails & Vistas, collaborates each year with more than 30 artists, creating site-specific art works celebrating the environment with the goal of reestablishing a sense of community and inspiring a personal connection with nature.

Each of her paintings at Riverside Studios contains part of earth from a specific place — a discovered stone, stick or element of nature that inspired her work.

"My art is about connection — to a place, to the earth, to people's lives and to our creativity," she said. "I draw my inspiration from the landscape and incorporate natural materials into the canvas."

Look outside to find inner truth

Visual artist Bishop says, "I wanted a way to integrate the evident power and peace of the natural world into my soul, and then into my art. Taking my first Trails & Vistas tours, many years ago now, very much sparked that connection."

Nature inspires her to hone a love of color, texture, pattern and form in her magical paintings. Bishop strives to reach inside for her truth and portray it, whatever form that may take.

Integrate the body

Angelique Benicio, visual and performance artist, says that as a participating artist in Trails & Vistas, she "became addicted to the whole idea of creating ephemeral installation in nature. The process has made me more physically connected to my artwork and the world around me."

When creating her art in nature, half the adventure is being flexible and working with the elements.

"The most successful experiences have happened when my work adapted itself to the environment and not the other way around," Benicio said. "Nature humbles me."

Taking risk and trusting the artistic cycle of creating, giving and receiving are integral to her process.

Share stories

When St. Clair, visual artist and storyteller, first met Tieken Lopez, she quickly recognized they both shared a passion for the process of discovery through collaboration.

"Nature supports each work I create," says St. Clair. "Through the Trails & Vistas School Field Trips, Nancy has given me the opportunity to do what I love most: to interact with children through storytelling."

She hikes for inspiration, taking her time to observe carefully.

"I can learn everything I need to know about creativity from a twisted tree or a lichen-covered boulder or a U-shaped riverbed," St. Clair said.

She also added: "It takes courage to turn an idea into a work of art. It takes, in humility and sincerity, the ability to access the genius we all have."

New Possibilities of the Harp

To compliment the visual art set for Friday, Kosako will share his dazzling and innovative jazz harp compositions at throughout the evening.

"I am reclaiming the hidden possibilities of the harp through my original compositions and various styles and improvisation," Kosako said. "I believe it will bring new life into the music scene to rediscover the beauty of the harp."

Born in Matsuyama City, Japan, Kosako played the acoustic and electric guitar in professional jazz bands.

In 1997, Mr. Kosako moved to the United States and soon after he started composing and playing music, which is improvisational and beautiful.

Since 2008 he started touring Japan to give performances and he is considered as the most influential Jazz harpist in Japan.
